I can you that the way for this GM and Sundin to build this street cred would be to NOT trade Knies.

If he trades Knies, especially if this GM has a big year, this GM will be booed out of town and the pick of 1st overall will be nullified quickly as he is part of the solution if he wants to stay, not the problem.

The dust began to settle Wednesday on one of the Blackhawks' biggest trades of the last decade.

2. The Blackhawks did kick the tires on available top-six forwards. The Toronto Maple Leafs’ asking price for Matthew Knies was believed to be the No. 4 pick and one of the Blackhawks’ top players. I’m not sure who the Leafs asked for, but Frank Nazar or Anton Frondell seem possible. At that point, the Blackhawks are probably losing more than they’re getting.

Two regimes now trying to trade him. At this point I wouldn’t be surprised if Knies asked out. Guy clearly loves Toronto, the fans love him, he’s signed to a sweetheart deal and he produces in the regular season and playoffs. I don't get why you'd want to trade Knies, unless you're getting a #1dman in return. I love the player but if playoffs have shown us anything, is that you don't get very far without horses on the back-end.

I like Knies, have been pumped for him since he was in the NCAA and he’s been everything I’ve hoped for but how can he not be absolutely soured on this organization after all this?

Since the leak of Treliving missing the TDL cut off to the last week of incessant speculation, how fractured is this relationship and how does he possibly feel about this team?

At this point I can’t see how Chundin can repair the relationship with Knies and make him feel like he is a big part of the team.

I think they just screwed things up with a guy who should be a big part of their future, and for what?

I think if a trade with Buffalo happens for the 4th overall, it will be on Friday. Leafs might have a player in mind, like Chase Reid, that they're hoping drops to that spot before making the deal.

It would have to be more than 4th overall for me to make the trade.

Hate this.

Except he’s not Wilson or Tkachuk. With two or three concussions already early in his career he can’t play that recklessly. Still a great player with better hands than Wilson, he’s definitely a power forward with a ton of potential who could be a future Leafs captain.

If Chayka had come in and put all the smoke out about a Knies trade, it would be pretty easy for the player to move on but since Chayka has arrived, these conversations around Knies have only increased.

This all didn't just start with Treliving randomly deciding on his own that he would deal Knies. They would have had intense discussions with their scouts and gone over this pretty intensely.

Call me crazy, but I can see the motivation for trading Matthew Knies.

If you can get a guy like Frank Nazar or Ryan McLeod + a 4th overall pick for him; you've solved a long term need at centre, and added a major long term piece on the blueline; for a guy that you might view as the ultimate complimentary piece. It would go a long way to building a core around McKenna, Cowan, etc.

If you're doing that, you better be trading Matthews.

Alternatively, if you could go out and sign Alex Tuch to replace much of what Knies does, one could make the argument that you're further ahead in the concept of retooling.

I don't know what Chayka's vision for the Leafs forward group is; we just saw Carolina win a cup with a lineup that did not have a ton of size in it's top 9; relying on speed & pace. Maybe he looks at all the smaller sized skill players we have and thinks he can duplicate that template.

What I do know; or at least believe, is that impressing Matthews needs to be part of his decision making process, and I don't see how getting rid of the guy that's able to do all of Matthews' heavy lifting is going to help with that.
