Really depends on the price. We don't have really much of an excess of talent at any position. I would give up probably a second with a small plus.

Shinny has proven nothing at the NHL level though. Read is a proven sniper.

Don't see why we would give up anything to get a small older RW. Is he even an upgrade on Versteeg?

Hunter did fine last year and is looking great in the AHL. Give him a chance.

Still want to give Pribyl a month or so to get up to speed as well.

Flames don't have the cap space to take on Read without sending a contract back

They also don't have the cap space to call up anyone from the AHL right now

RW really isn't an issue right now. Yes, the Flames lack a true #1, but between Versteeg, Brouwer, and Frolik, the depth isn't bad at all. I'm not sure how much of an upgrade Read is on Brouwer/Frolik (or even if he is an upgrade).

I'd say all three are better.

Despite his hot start, read is not the player he was his first two seasons, and his numbers sorely reflect that.

Read can play any offensive position (hasn't really played center at the NHL level). I'm not sure what the Flames' LW depth is but he could help there. Read is a second or third line player and he wouldn't do anything for you guys at RW.

We have plenty of 2nd and 3rd liners as is.

Has he ever played for Chicago? If no, he's probably not a good fit on our RW. :sarcasm:

But yes, our cap situation is crazy tight right now.

I like Matt Read a lot. How about something around Bouma?

Surprised Flames didn't jump at the Taravainen opportunity in the summer, to be honest.

I do think Read could be dealt this year... we have a lot of wingers already... and at least one or two more coming to the NHL next year.

But I imagine it is nearer the deadline when teams know whereabouts they are in standings etc.

The Flyers could use some help at 3rd line centre, I was wondering if Mikael Backlund was available. If so maybe a trade could be worked out somehow.

Backlund and Read have close to the same cap hit, but if a deal centred around Backlund and Read were made the Flyers would have to add a pick or a forward prospect, because Backlund is the better player and 3 years younger then Read.

Would also be interested in Michael Ferland, but his cap hit is way lower then Read's is, so that wouldn't work for Calgary. Also not interested in Bouma as a throw in to even out the cap hits.

Anyhow say if Read were traded to Calgary, he probably would end up as a 3rd liner on either wing, but Read would prefer the right side.

Brouwer and Frolik are better players then Read is. so ask yourself do you really need another 3rd liner, when guys like Shinkaruk, Pribyl or Jankowski can just about do the same job, instead of giving up assets for Matt Read.

A deal based around Backlund and Read would NEVER work.

Backlund >>>> Read

Backlund is arguably the Flames most valuable center. One of the most underrated players in the league. Easily one of the best shutdown centers in the NHL. He is NOT available.

Backlund is pretty much off the table. Slowly climbing up the 2C Ladder the last couple of years. He's not a third line centre, he's worth more than a ten goal scorer and some picks/prospects, and he's probably our best forward right now.
