His insurance isn't covering his bail any more

That’s not what the article says:

Petgrave explained on CrowdJustice that the funds are needed because he is no longer covered by his insurance, and that his U.K. visa has expired meaning that he cannot work as a hockey player while out on bail.

"The time and costs involved in the legal investigation and potential court proceedings are difficult for me to cover on a privately funded basis," he said. "Any remaining funds will be donated to initiatives that promote safety in hockey, via a CrowdJustice campaign in-line with their unused funds policy."

He’s having a hard time paying lawyers’ fees because he’s unemployed and can no longer get a job in his primary field of work.

I find it bizarre that they’re still in the process of a “complex investigation” over this. It happened well over a year ago… what could be left to investigate at this point? What are they doing, taking DNA samples from everyone who ever met him? Get on with it and let the man have his day in court.

He's responsible for his own actions, and should serve his sentence himself. Why on earth would anyone crowdfund it?

This makes me have an even worse opinion of him than I already did.

Sorry I misread that part, anyways he should have a right to a quick trial and I see no reason for this to be drawn out as long as it has.

The UK legal system is different than the NA. Being arrested and held on bail doesn't mean he will end up being charged like it ususally does in NA. He hasn't been formally charged yet.

He obviously he hopes the charge is ultimately dropped rather than having to go to a trial.

That said, I don't see what kind of case they could realisitically bring against him and I agree that the whole investigation process taking to long to get this resovled is rather puzzling.

How about, manslaughter? You know, the crime that they're investigating?

In USA, I believe that would be third degree murder.

I'm not going to give him a round of applause like Reddit because I think he was acting with some degree of carelessness and attempting to commit a penalty, but I do think it did occur enough in the context of a consensual sporting activity that it was an accident and not something that should result in civil/criminal liability.

Yeah..I was talking about actual evidence and facts to show that he had intended to do anything close to what happened, which is what they'd have to do. Good luck with that

After watching that clip dozens of times, my opinion is the same as that of the deceased victim's aunt's as presented in the article linked by the OP:
Adam Johnson's aunt, Kari Johnson, said in November 2023: "My nephew was 6-feet tall, and whether you lost your balance or not, to have that leg come up that high and do a kicking motion like [Petgrave] did, that is just unacceptable.

"I think the actions were unnecessary. It was just unnecessary. Nobody touched him. I've watched that video hundreds of times."
That I believe that Matt Petgrave intentionally raised his leg, by no accident, and also delivered a kick intentionally. Now, it was not intended to kill, nor even hit the head. But I fully believe that the kick was intentional.

Hence, manslaughter is a perfectly logical thing to investigate(third degree murder):
The unintentional killing of another through an eminently dangerous act committed with a depraved mind and without regard for human life
Now, when I presented this view, I was met with massive downvote campaigns on reddit, etc., but I definitely agree with Kari Johnson, as that's exactly how I saw it. And while many people seemed surprised that manslaughter is even being investigated because it was "pure accident," I replayed that clip countless times and couldn't come up with any other explanation than that he kicked Adam Johnson intentionally.

Now, I'm expecting this to be an unpopular opinion here as well. Which is sad, since I for one would assume that people would be looking for justice for the deceased.

Can I donate to the prosecution so he gets his proper manslaughter charge?
Agreed, I would donate for that if I had the link to do so.
