He did GM Treliving and the Leafs a HUGE solid and favour last year when he agreed to sit out the entire year on LTIR, while collecting his full $8 mil salary.

MM was a bitter poison pill left behind by the previous management.

Now making league minimum $875k as a reward Treliving re-signed him to give him another opportunity to play in the NHL again.

"You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours", :wg:

Really nothing to lose a but a few regulation games now.
Which is exactly the reputation I would try to establish if I were GM. People that guffaw William was given a half million more because he outperformed his last deal, obviously wouldn’t agree.

He’s 30, not 40.

Perfect stop gap, nobody cares about his long term health issues or if he needs waivers, just make a few starts and get us over the hump. Exactly why he’s here.
Yup, in a cap world it's all about money for value. At 4.5 we were getting hosed on Murray, but at what he makes now it's great to have a guy like him around

I hope he does well and can propel this into an NHL position somewhere

I’m likely in the minority but I wasn’t really happy with the signing tbh.

I’m just against bringing failures into my environment. The guy had a mental breakdown in 2022-23 or at least wasn’t mentally sharp and his career went down the drain. We don’t need that around Stolarz/Woll and our young goalies.

Murray is a legit NHL starting goalie (when he’s healthy), the guy isn’t over the hill by goalie standards and he has a ton of experience and talent.

The Leafs effectively have 3 starting level goalies
He’s the same age as Stolarz and the difference between him and Woll is 4 years. Looking at the past accomplishments of the 3, I’d think having Murray is a plus.

The Leafs have their 1a injured and out for 6 weeks, they need a reliable 3rd goalie and maybe he’s the answer.
I hope so

I don’t see it the same way. Matt Murray is a solid third option. He’s got the best stats of the three Marlies goalies, he’s a veteran with two Stanley Cups, and he brings valuable experience.

Health is obviously the big question. If he stays healthy, he’s a great safety net. If not, we’ve got the two kids on the Marlies, who both have potential. For now, it’s better for their development to be getting reps in the AHL.

It’s sad for us that our often injured number 1@ is injured again and having yet another surgery on his knee

Just saying the last time Murray was in this position in his career... he fought to stay on the NHL roster and then ended up dethroning the starting goalie to win the cup.

It’s going to take some time to get back into the routine of NHL games and shots but he did decent tonight.

Murr battled hard, kudos to him for making NHL comeback. Real champion pedigree, albeit with hips damaged. Let’s see how his second start goes next week, Jets probably?

I hope they give Woll the start against the Jets (23rd). Yes, only one day off but then they can play Murray on the 27th against Detroit, and have Woll on four days rest for Washington on the 28th.

That's for sure—losing Stolarz is a big hit to the team, and there's no way to sugarcoat it. Maybe this is why we got him at such a reasonable price? Hopefully, this is just a clean-up injury he can bounce back from, but six weeks is significant. With the Four Nations Cup happening, maybe this timeline includes giving him extra rest. Either way, the next six weeks likely mean 20 games, and Woll probably plays 12-14 of those. That leaves us needing a reliable backup to handle 6-8 games and secure at least 4-5 wins.

I was at the game in Buffalo, and Murray didn’t exactly inspire confidence as the backup. He was fine, but he got beat five times (two called back). Right now, I don’t think he’s been any better or worse than Hildeby was, so I’d be fine with Murray staying as the bench backup while Hildeby gets minutes with the Marlies. That said, if Murray isn’t winning games or playing solid hockey, I wouldn’t mind seeing Hildeby or even Akhtyamov called up to give us a better option.

It isn't your environment.

We don’t need that around Stolarz/Woll and our young goalies.

I'm betting they are mentally strong enough to handle being around another pro.

It is a minor thing that has nothing at all to do with past injuries. These things happen in pro sports, get over it.
