New York Islanders: Matt Martin Retires, Named Special Assistant to the GM

you know a guy is loved by the fanbase when they basically invent a position for him.

Love Martin, VERY happy he is staying with the team. We may win a cup with him yet, just not in the capacity we thought.

Great opportunity for him. I wish him well in his new role.
Errr. Dougie Weight had a similar role to Snow, no?

Separate from that, it does feel like the Martin and Clutters are staying in and close to the team.

Yeah it's just the standard issue "learning the ropes" position. We'll see in a few years if he has a future in coaching or management.

Very young family, doubt he goes the coach route.

In Clutters interview he kinda said some guys just love it, others need a break from it since it’s been their entire life and have no interest.

13 games shy of 1,000 games, we can't get him a new deal for 13 games?! :sarcasm:
Maybe Darche tells him to keep in shape and after we unload some bodies at the trade deadline and need help in the tank for McKenna we enlist his services for the last 13 games.....

Well I mean "a few years" might mean 15 years  Just saying these ex players often start off as "assistants" or "consultants" and then end up *somewhere*.

Glad to see Martin stick around. Wonder if he has any ambition to be in management or if he’s doing this more as an ambassador?

I know you are being sarcastic but he played 88 postseason games on top of 987 regular season games.

He’s in the 1000 games club in my eye, I never understood why statisticians only count regular season games…

Darche On His Impressions of Martin:

Darche first described how he first met Martin, and it wasn’t in the past few months. It was the beginning of Martin’s career, and the end of Darche’s:

“Well, the first thing is this first few years were my last few years playing, I had to make sure I wasn’t fighting him because he would have beaten me up. So I remember that from those first few years, he was intimidating. He had that long hair back then.”

Darche seems like a very honest guy
