He spent the last four winters just down the street at Boston University, knowing this day would come. Now it’s here, the official start of his workaday hockey life, and Bruins rookie defenseman Matt Grzelcyk can’t avoid feeling the lingering tug of the Commonwealth Avenue campus.

“Talking to my buddies at school, and hearing how their classes and stuff are going,’’ Grzelcyk, 22, mused the other day, “it feels weird not to wake up there, be heading to class and stuff, but . . .â€

Raised across the river in Charlestown, Grzelcyk in the spring signed his entry-level NHL contract with the Bruins and on Thursday he will join the rest of the Black-and-Gold fresh faces for the start of rookie camp. They’ll take their physicals, be handed their sweater numbers, and take their first baby steps toward their NHL careers.

He grew up on the mean streets of Belmont. Almost as tough as Vesey...

Excited to see this kid play. Supposed to be a strong skater and the B's sure as hell need that.

I thought he was a Townie? The kid who used to cut my hair claimed to have grown up with him in Charlestown.

Grzelcyk virtually grew up on Causeway Street, his father a decades-long member of the Garden bull gang and one of the regular Zamboni drivers. No one has logged more career ice time in Boston than John Grzelcyk. With the “new’’ Garden about to turn 21 years old (Sept. 30), Matt doesn’t have memories of the Bruins playing in the original arena, or of his dad cleaning the ice.

“But I’m pretty sure we’ve got a picture of me inside the old Garden,’’ he said. “Yeah, I mean, I think I was still in the cradle.’’

He went to Belmont Hill School, a ritzy all boys prep school in Belmont, prior to joining USNTDP. No doubt he went just for hockey, and probably on a scholarship/financial aid.

My understanding is he grew up in Charlestown, right near the Garden.

I'm just being a bit silly. I'm clearly not over losing Vesey.

In all seriousness, truly psyched to see him play.

Just don't see where he fits. I want to but I just don't.

Because our current D, as configured, is so strong ?

All kidding aside, I know very little about this player.
Read he is undersized , but a good/great skater and transition D.
This team can probably have one more small D'man and be effective,
so who knows.

Takes the place of JM Liles. Similar size, similar playing style, just a question of young legs vs. veteran experience.

I mean, JM Liles isn't someone I want in the lineup if we're competing for a cup. He's a transitional stop gap D man until some of our prospects are ready. Just because Grizz is similar size to JML doesn't mean I want someone that size replacing JML lol.

The best D man will play, but I think there are players with more upside and his size could be an issue.

66.66666666666667% of our D is a stop gap til the prospects arrive.

He'll play in the NHL. Just not sure if he's more of a Krug/Liles type or a Warsofsky type.

Exactly my sentiment. I know I'm different than a lot of Bruins fans on this, but if Gryzz turns into a Krug-esque player I have absolutely no problem carrying two of that type.

If you mean talent wise then absolutely, I'd love two Krugs on the backend. I just dont want a Krug and a Warsofsky... I'd rather have Krug and a McQuaid type.

I was watching tonight's game on my phone at work . At first I thought he was Torey Krug . He looks to have good wheels . Any chance he makes the team on opening night?

Needs to add 10 pounds. Close to being good enough on ability. Done the least wrong of any D man last couple games by a long way.

Very good player he can overcome lack of size like Krug has. A year or two with Whitesides and he'll be strong enough.
