Matt F*****g Martin

I remember reading a scouting report on Martin at some point after he was drafted, and it was over the top praising him for his compete level and will to succeed. I assumed at that point he'd make it to the NHL, just because it seemed like he wouldn't allow it to not happen. His career validated the scouting report.

Who would have thought that this 5th round pick kid would go on to become one of the most beloved Islanders of the past 25 years..

Leadership, hitting, punching people's faces in, 82 career NYI playoff games (5 playoff goals in the 2020 playoffs alone!) all while being a role model off the ice and advocate of the Islanders and Long Island as a whole.

Can't ask for much more out of a hockey player than that.

Thank you Marty.

(still wish you clocked Boomer for wearing a Raggie jersey when Sydney first introduced you)
And he made it out of that jersey. Whoof those were bad.

Well, all due respect, how has that worked out? Player development is not and has not been an Islander strong suit. Nor has scouting or management and the organization is littered with ex Isle players in some of those roles. Perfect example, Ken Morrow. For me anyway, because he's my age, he's humble, he was a member of the Miracle on Ice team, he played on all four Cup teams, he is in a close battle with Clark Gillies as my second favorite Islander all-time after Bossy. I love the guy and always will, but is he really the guy who you want running your pro scouting dept? How has that worked out for this organization but how do you fire a guy like that? That is one of the reasons I am so against these incestuous hires. I mean look at Yzerman in Detroit. Look at how much rope he has been given. Why? Because he's a legend in Detroit but if he isn't he's probably gone a few years ago. You hamstring yourself when you hire guys in key roles just because they are your guys. It's a bad way to do business.

There are certainly exceptions, I know that, but as general rule, keep your popular ex-players in PR and public outreach roles and leave the on ice hockey stuff to people you know are easy to fire if it comes to that.
I cannot argue with the fact we have had problems developing players and giving Feel Good players a job may not be the best idea just to keep someone around. Our attempts at drafting a Power Forward are a great example of just picking the wrong guy to begin with. We seem to pick guys who Physically "Look" like they will fit the bill but always wind up with guys who do not have the Motor or the Heart and in the end Fail to mature into their potential.
But I do agree with you, somehow we need to pry away some other teams brain trust on Scouting and Hire them.... That won't happen with Lou at the Helm....

Matt Martin for his entire career on the Island carried 1/3 of this team’s identity on his big shoulders. For all the heartbreaking losses this team took both on and off the ice both in and out of playoffs through the years we can always count on Matt Martin to represent the Islanders with great character, class, honor, and hard work. He represents the best of what it meant to be an Islander. So proud of #17. What a career.

the love the guy gets is just so warranted. hes an incredible dude and the nicest person (i've run into him multiple times, last fall at a steakhouse as well and hes just so approachable and friendly). hes shown us loyalty when others didnt and he should be recognized and rewarded for it

I just remembered this photo of him riding the escalator at the mall. Couldn't find the tweet but found a picture of it. Enjoy your retirement Matt.

I'm sure the Isles would give him a job in the organization, but I could also see Martin being a natural in broadcasting. How old is Butch? Or maybe starting as a studio guy with the Isles and then going to the national network. Probably an easier life and more $$ than most club jobs.

If Hickey doesn't become the new Isles GM (;)) or get picked up full time on a national broadcast, he'll be the one getting Butchie's job. So I guess Martin can have Hickey's job then.

Yeah, that makes sense. Color isn't easy, so it's probably better for a rookie to start out lower and work up the ladder. Martin is a good looking guy (I don't mean it that way) and is well spoken, so he'd be good on TV. And I'm sure Boomer can give him tips for breaking in.

He might just want to spend time with his family and show up for poker night and random games here or there.

Hickey is absolutely unreal and I wouldn’t complain if he was Butches Long Term replacement next to Brendan. Clutterbuck does a solid job too. People love Martin so I’m sure he’ll be a natural
