This all-world human being deserves his own thread. I said it years ago when his game started to fade...

Matt Martin should be hired into the Isles front office as soon as he is done playing.

He should always be a part of the Islanders organization as long as he wants to be. If Eric Cairns is the Director of Player Development, then Matt Martin should be President of Hockey Operations.

In fact, now that I mention it...

Anyway when you get down to it, I probably love him more than an other Islander over the past decade. Pure heart, class, and character. Obviously not the greatest hockey player, but everything you would want from a player and teammate...

Big fan, have his jersey and wore it to the game in Philadelphia the other day. He's not what he once was and he shouldn't have been kept around this long but he's been a great Islander over all these years. I'll always remember fight night, which wasn't his best moment, but the growth he had after as an enforcer was huge. He was an honest and clean player, even when he was throwing hits and punches. I'll never forget when he KO'd Kostopoulos and tried to get the trainers over immediately. Obviously he was a huge part of the best fourth line in hockey for a while and contributed in key moments beyond the PIMs.

I don't think we ever got the full story but the rumors about how he stuck up for Marner with the Babcock situation speaks to the type of person we believe him to be. He put his own career on the line to prevent an abuse of power and to protect a teammate. Kudos to him for that, even if it wasn't in an Islanders sweater.

Between him, bails and Nelson it’s a real change in the team from what I grew up watching. Lee is almost done.

Makes me sad. Very unique of having guys drafted and play throughout while not being a franchise player.

One of the best parts of Martin is how once he came back from Toronto he played the most important hockey of his career after we thought he was done here.

When the franchise was at its lowest he came in and helped set a culture that we sorely needed. I agree that he should have a job here.

Yeah, when he left for TOR I wasn't disappointed as I thought he was too old and slow at that point. Then he came back a couple of years later and was great. Showed me up.

The kid from Sarnia was built windsor tough. Came in hitting everything. Still remember the image of Mm in that game 7 loss to Tampa. Just looking at him when the game was over, he had the expression that he may never get a better chance at a cup.

I'm sure that the GM comments were in jest but any job in hockey operations of any sort should be merit based and not loyalty driven. If he wants to learn the job then maybe someday he'll have the chops for it but for the people suggesting him for some kind of immediate hire there you're as bad as Lou. Competent management and not an endless string of "looking out for our own" and nepotism is what will move this franchise forward. For the immediate future, if MM wants a job make it in PR. We need pros running the hockey show and maybe someday he'll be one but for the moment he is not qualified.

Absolute legend of a human being and the Mayor of Long Island! Modern Day Mr.Islander!!! Ultimate team guy and fan favorite. Never needed to question his effort or his commitment to the team. This man bled Royal Blue & Orange and made others bleed for it from time to time. I wish he would play 15 more games to reach 1,000. That’s a huge career accomplishment and he’s right there. He deserves it.

I’m going to share 2 personal photos. My oldest daughter just turned 18 on April first. She has this this picture hanging in her room. It was 2010 at the isles prospect game after we drafted Nino. My Daughter was just 3 years old at the time. During the game there was a few guys sitting watching in the 300’s of the coliseum. No one was around or near them. I noticed it was Matt Martin Travis Hamonic and Mikko Koskinen. Martin and Hamonic played NHL games so they were playing in prospects game but they were just 20 and 21 years old at the time. I walked o er and said hello and they were really respectful and cool. This was way before they made a name for themselves in the NHL or even for the islanders. I politely asked at the end of the convo if my daughter could take a picture and Martin and Hamonic without hesitation said absolutely and Matty picked my daughter up and held her. Since that day he’s been one of our favorites. Especially my daughters. 15 years later my daughter is heading to college after her senior year of high school and Martin is an isles legend.

The 2nd picture is me and my daughter at an isles game a few years ago.(Sorokin shutout against oilers) For reference that Martin was around for an entire young generation of isles fans.

We’ll always love and appreciate Marty on Long Island and looks forward to seeing him and his family around town and at isles games.!!!
