Value of: Matt Duchene to Mtl

Duchene NEVER played center for Nashville, and we were crying out for a center, and desperately signed him in the hopes that he could be a center. But he just isn't really a center kind of a player? Well, he wasn't a fit AT ALL at center for Colorado or Nashville. Yet now seems to be for Dallas? :dunno:

Anyway, I only know what I saw in Nashville, and the guy just carried the puck into the corner every time and couldn't play center if his life depended on it. Some smarter coaches in Dallas seem to have fixed him? I don't know if I'd trust that to hold everywhere. He sure never looked like a guy who could play center to me. But he's not going to Montreal, he has found a sweet sweet home in Dallas while the dumbass Preds continue to subsidize his salary. :help:
As I recall he spent most of his time in Colorado at centre...they tried him at right wing on and off for a couple years between 2015-2017, but even then it was in a hybrid role where he'd frequently switch into the centre role.

Anyways...Duchene would be a terrible fit in Montreal IMO. He's not the kinda guy who handles a lot of pressure well. Seems like he's found a good home in Dallas.

Douchene outperformed that contract just 1 year in after the covid stupidity. Why Nashville bought him out still makes no sense. Can easily argue hes played at that $7M value in Dallas too. Still dont like him though.
He was brutal defensively and couldn't handle center there. 50 points is not outperforming an 8 mil contract when you're supposed to be a 1C. In four years he had one good season. Overall he got paid 32 million for an average of 62.25 games a season at 49.25 points. Those aren't 8 mil 1C money numbers, that's why they bought him out. Maybe it was premature but he'd probably be leading he charge to last place cause he's always been the first guy to give up when the momentum shifts down.

Youre def not wrong, but coming off an 86 point season right before shouldve showed signs that he was the player they paid for.

Trotz buying him out was pure stupidity.

Ok, ok, some of us fans kinda didn't appreciate Duchene, sure. Mea culpa. We wanted him to be a bit more of a "savior" vs. being just a generically talented top-6 cog on RW. But the buyout was predicated on some dumb "culture" crusade that Trotz was on, and we've seen this season just how absolutely braindead that crusade was. Duchene is no worse than the guys Trotz signed to replace him, that's for sure (Stamkos, Marchessault). And since we've been paying him and inhaling his huge buyout Cap at the same time... what a horrific overall decision that was for the Preds. Maybe it isn't getting a lot of attention due to how lowkey the media coverage is in Nashville. But that has to rank up there with some of the dumbest decisions of All Time in the NHL.

Like, we paid $5-6M Cap for the Duchene buyout, plus paid Stamkos $8M. So we're tagged for around $14M for a worse player? Niiiiice work, Barry. :help:

Are you drunk?

As for the OP, why would Duchene leave Dallas for Montreal? That is a comical suggestion.
Stars have already have $90M in salaries committed in 2026 leaving $5.5M in cap space with Benn, Duchene, Dadonov, Granlund and Ceci all turning UFA. That is a lot of wholes to fill with $5.5M. If a team throws $8M at Duchesne, especially an up and coming one that he cheered for as a kid doing something pretty special this year, I'm willing to eat crow that he won't be saying hey Dallas let's sign $3M for my ppg season.

He has a 3M AVV, could leave to a better offer that Dallas can't match

So why didn't he do that this year?

Money isn't the issue. He doesn't want to keep moving his family. He loves Dallas.

He ain't going to Montreal folks.

I was speaking in general why he might go(not specifically Montreal). He may love Dallas but if some team gives him a contract that has more security it would be hard to pass up if it's in a place he wouldn't mind living. Not saying Dallas can't give him that but if all they have is another 1 year low money deal lined up he may look elsewhere

You didn't answer why he signed a 1 year low money deal this year tho.

You can't say he doesn't want 1 year low money deals.. when he took another one. You are making up fake scenarios in your mind.

I said "could" which means I am speculating

I doubt he leaves the Stars, he clearly wants to be there and is nearing the end of his career…….hes not leaving for a bubble team when he’s on a strong playoff team.

Montreal is literally the last place on earth Duchene would go. He for sure doesn't want to be in Canada even though he's from here. He likes Dallas. He likes the south. He likes country. He's shown this over and over and over and over again.

Right team wrong target imo, try to overpay Granlund for 2 years. I know he's on the wing in Dallas but played center in SJ. Duchene isn't leaving Dallas, listen to his interview with Spittin Chiclets I think it's pretty clear as long as they're not offering literal peanuts he's ending his career there

"[L]iterally the last place on earth Duchene would go"? Really?

Montreal was the only other team he seriously considered before signing in Nashville and has deep family ties to the Montreal area. How on earth do you know that would literally the last place on earth he would go?

I doubt he leaves Dallas unless they lowball him too much, but I doubt he'd sign with 30 teams ahead of Montreal. Maybe not even half that.
