New York Islanders: Mathieu Darche is named GM of the New York Islanders

What does the GM of a farm team actually do? Doesn't the NHL GM or president handle all the player transactions?
I think a lot of the people in that role have the title of Asst GM/Director of Player Development/GM of AHL team. I think those were the titles of Stacy Roast who just left TBL and is the rumored new Isles hire. The stern-looking dude with DAL also might have those titles.

That's mgmt problem. Why the hell would they extend him last year? Did they not watch how the team was playing, did they not see how Roy was all over the place, criticizing the GM, his players.

Do you really want that type of coach? Two things happens with a coach like him. Players tune him out and get tired of his act REAL fast. And as a new GM, you want your coach calling you out in the media.

Stupid move by Darche in my opinion.
in his interviews, Darche seems to suggest that when he sat down with Roy, he sees they are on the same page about how to play the game. I don’t think this is a case of just keeping the old coach because the owners made him, or because he wants to wait a year for his guy; I think they both want to play the same style of hockey and Roy has a similar view on the players currently on the team as Darche does. In that case, it makes sense to keep Roy and let him hire his coaching team.

What I like about Darche based on his intro press conference is that he is a straight shooter, along with John Collins, who actually went overboard when suggesting kids on regional Long Island who play hockey can become other team's fans.

I know it's only a week into his hiring.....But I do not like what's going on. Serious, serious doubts that Darche has full controll of team. Same old shit....never changes. What I'm seeing is, if he wanted the job, he had to make a bunch of concessions for it.

Looking like a weak, puppet of a GM so far.

I suggest not infiltrating perif; for the love of this f***ing message board.

Some level of continued employment for Chris may have been included in Lou's contract. We have no idea.

Keeping Roy makes all the sense in the world. Give him the chance to get his own coaches and work with him to get the players needed to play the way he wants. See if it works and if it doesn't, move on down the line.
yeah he's pretty much got a free pass when he does fire Roy at some point .

Roy has some rope to play with for a season

Exactly. Worst case, If Roy doesn’t work, it’s not on him, as Roy isn’t his guy. He can then fire him and brings in his guy. Best case, it works out with Roy.

If he were to fire Roy now, his guy is already here. If it doesn’t work out, then what?

GMs usually only get 1, maybe 2 coach hires before they themselves get canned. Can’t blow one out of the gate, just because.

Friedman was on the Kyper and Bourne show yesterday and they talked briefly about the Isles. Pretty much said Darche won them over (after Holland passed) but that Lou is still around and is advising Malkin. While Darche reports directly to Malkin, Malkin still listens to Lou - so Lou is not out of the picture. They also said keeping Roy was part of the deal, he still has 2-3 years left on his deal worth between 7-10 million.

Interestingly, they also said that giving long term deals to the AGMs (Chris L and Pellegrini) is par for the course in the NHL, Blake did the same before his ouster in LA as have many others before them. GMs who know they are about to be canned want to look after their guys that really don't make that much money compared to the GM, so they give them these deals.

What joke of an organization!!! Things will never change. It's confirmed, Darche is no more than a puppet.

Not hating on the outgoing GM's for trying to get their guys paid, but I'm super surprised that owners put up with this shit?
