New York Islanders: Mathieu Darche is named GM of the New York Islanders

That's mgmt problem. Why the hell would they extend him last year? Did they not watch how the team was playing, did they not see how Roy was all over the place, criticizing the GM, his players.

Do you really want that type of coach? Two things happens with a coach like him. Players tune him out and get tired of his act REAL fast. And as a new GM, you want your coach calling you out in the media.

Stupid move by Darche in my opinion.
At this stage of the offseason, fire Roy and hire who?
Darche gives Roy a year with Roy choosing his own staff and it gives Darche a year to evaluate the roster and organization.
If Darche doesn’t like what Roy is doing he will have more time to assess and hire a replacement

you don't think any potential person for a GM spot doesn't have a plan in their minds on who they want working with them? He has a bunch of names past and present he is thinking about bring in for his new staff.

Do you honestly think guys going into the interview process not having an idea??

How do you know the guy he wants is available? Maybe he’s been hired already?
Giving Roy a year is far from the worst outcome, especially if next year is a building year, I doubt anyone is expecting to compete for a championship

again, respect your opinion, but I think it's a bad move.

Keeping Roy is the easiest keep for a new GM. Buys you time to see what is happening and is an easy fire if things dont work out. I imagine they arent going on any huge signing sprees this year, its time to turn over the roster and bring in younger faster team, as he's already indicated. That will take time. And given next years draft, it might be a good time to stink....

Teach me how to Darchey. Teach me, teach me how to Darchey.

All my bitches love me, you ain't f***in with my Darchey!

The one good thing here about Darche being hired now, is there are inherent checkpoints to understand where he is taking things: the draft and free agency.

Anyone post this? Looks like Collins basically threw LL under the bus . . .

Honestly Lou had such an ego when it came to the roster either way. Did he want to ever improve, or was he stubborn when it came to his failures such as Engvall, Duclair, the P&P extensions being extremely meh in retrospect with the way how both performed after getting them, and even every offseason failing to add parts to the bottom 6 regularly. The fact Lou almost *always* hired from places that he knew instead of different organizations was also a massive problem. You seriously couldn't do better than John MacLean for power play?

I really do hope Darche tries in free agency. Lou's "cone of silence" is such retro bullshit in a day and age where I can pick up my phone and start scrolling to see rumors.

He’s not throwing Lou under the bus. He’s being honest and transparent. Malkin and Ledecky hired a HOFer known to operate organizations his way.

Since that time they have added two new owners and Collins has a much larger presence because he’s the business guy, he said ‘brand’ about a half dozen times in the presser.

The team is going into a different phase/evolution. That’s all. Lou did his thing, but now it’s time to be a ‘brand’ vs a hockey operation.

Agreed. Lou brought some credibility back to the organization, but to me, it was too much about one man and his thoughts.

Im much more interested to see where this all goes now. The best teams nowadays - as im starting to witness with the Mets - work well together as a full system. They're nimble, astute data crunchers, have tentacles in everything, dont miss a beat, leverage social media/communication and act shrewdly.
I can't be certain but i'm pretty sure that LL did almost none of that. We were organizationally slow, stubborn, didnt use metrics well and made too many contractual mistakes.

Darche seems to have a good brain, overall

He was my pick for GM for the Habs when they were looking to replace Bergevin

IMO he was the best guy available. I'm happy you guys take him, instead of recycling a Bergevin or a Holland or something
