New York Islanders: Mathieu Darche is named GM of the New York Islanders

New thread is up specifically for the interview. I'm not sure what to expect but at least we'll have a concise recap of what is said.

He you hired him, do you now want to write the check to fire him? And pay another guy to coach?

Owner says no. So, new GM rides out coach until it doesn’t work out.
Isles bring in a new GM and immediately tie him to the previous coach because the owner might not want to pay off a non-salary cap employee. And you gleaned this from firing the awful radio crew in a cost-cutting measure? I don't buy it.

No, that’s not where I gleaned this from. No one knows, but Roy does have contract with term on it. The owner/Collins could have canned Roy already, but they didn’t. So, Roy is part of the deal in being GM.

I was so excited for those picks. It was like..."We're going to draft the core of our team in just 2 hours!"

Then you find out that later that it was one of the worst drafts of the era. No wonder they were able to get 4 first rounders.

Yeah just crazy how bad that draft was. After the Sedin twins the best guy in the end was Havlat who went 26th. The Isles actually made the 2 best picks they could have in the top 15 as Connolly and Pyatt had the most successful careers of anyone after the top 3 until Jackman at 17

But...

Darche/Collins are going to be certainly asked about who will stay and who will go. There would be no reason to schedule this press conference without at least deciding on the coaching staff. It's going to be the #1 question the press are going to want an answer for...And truth is, it should be Darche's first order of business. Lord knows he's been a candidate for a month so if he wasn't thinking about what he'd do with Roy before he was even hired I'd be disappointed.

I could understand Darche wanting to wait and evaluate the assistant GMs, scouting department, etc, but to not get an answer on Roy today would be shocking (and make me question what they've been doing/why even schedule the press conference yet).

Called it. Literally first question asked was about Roy.

(And they even had the Tweet fired up and ready to go)

There should be a good bet going by January. Who is more likely to keep their job, Daboll or Roy as both are in somewhat similar positions.

Pierre Mcguire just announced Roest to Isles on his podcast very very confidently. Doubled down on it later in the show "it's happening".

Yes, that is unknown. However, it’s been alleged Roy is on a 3 or 4 year deal. While he was ostracized for awhile, I doubt Lou took that into consideration when paying him. So, he’s probably paid a reasonable amount - somewhere between Trotz money and Lambert money. That’s a decent amount of money to pay the guy that’s 1/2 in making the playoffs and one can use the injury excuse for last season, if so inclined.
That's mgmt problem. Why the hell would they extend him last year? Did they not watch how the team was playing, did they not see how Roy was all over the place, criticizing the GM, his players.

Do you really want that type of coach? Two things happens with a coach like him. Players tune him out and get tired of his act REAL fast. And as a new GM, you want your coach calling you out in the media.

Stupid move by Darche in my opinion.

Wild guess here, but to entice Roy to coach, Roy need to offset the risk of being a short hire, so Lou gave him term, but with clauses. My guess is that if he made the playoffs when he took over for Lambert, it kicked in an extension.

Also explains why Roy would openly challenge things in the media - that’s him to begin with, but also him having confidence in his contract - Lou want firing him.

For Darche, maybe the path forward is there’s a lot to do, Roy is under contract already, focus on the ‘building’ piece and re-evaluate Roy with his own assistants. I just don’t see Malkin eating Roy’s contract right now and covering with another one.

I understand what you are saying. But my other issue is at the presser, Darche stated he was going to sit down with Roy to find out the type of players he wants on the roster. I'm not sure I like that, especially that the jury is still out on Roy. So you are going to build a roster with Roy players. If Roy doesn't work out, what do you do then?

It should be that the GM dictates how the team's overall style and development and the coach, coaches that's it. If the coach doesn't like it, then they move on.

Did anyone watch the f***ing press conference? (I did)

I was expecting 45,000 responses. What do I get, more conjecture. HF, you disappoint me. Now, WTF am I suppose to read.

We’re in “Lane Lambert is getting head coach jobs again” territory. Well is dry. Give Roy a short leash and revisit next offseason if it comes down to it.
Guy Boucher (Darche's coach at McGill) is under contract in the KHL until next season.

If Roy shits the bed, he's an easy fire because he was "Lou's guy" and he can bring in his trusted comrade in Boucher. If Roy is the Tits with a curated roster and coaching staff, you ride out his existing contract.

It's a win/win for Matty Ice.

Cooper also has a year left on his deal. Unlikely but maybe he’ll want a new challenge. And you’ll get the usual coach carousel, a few decent coaches getting bounced bc they still haven’t won a Cup or their teams are tuning them out or whatever. We won’t be figuring out our front office situation when it happens.

Also a Hofstra grad, another reason to kick the can down the road 12 months.

It makes tremendous sense.

Copper probably stays or goes depending on how the new ownership runs the team in comparison to Vinnik.
