New York Islanders: Mathieu Darche is named GM of the New York Islanders

Nice to know we’ll have actual behind the scenes look into our franchise hopefully and get to know these guys.

There’s a few teams that do a behind the scenes on YouTube. It’s fun for hockey fans to see what goes on behind the scenes like draft day and see what players do off the ice.
I hope they bring back blue and orange scrimmages and open practices. I really enjoyed watching newly drafted players in person all on the ice together. Hope Darche brings the fans back into it and get us excited about the team instead of Lou shutting us out.

This aspect of fan access, Lou keeping a tight lid on behind the scenes activities with the team, was a major problem for John Collins.

Well not sure why you'd be the least nervous with former GMs that literally failed at their previous stops (and no one else wants them now).

That said I guess you can take solace that you'd even be more nervous if the Isles did nothing and kept Lou.
Yes, I don't fall for shiny new toy syndrome like many posters on here. Matt Donovan didn't bring us a Stanley Cup and not sure this MD will either.

Tier 1
NY Islanders and Hobart Lacrosse

Tier 2
Other Hobart and William Smith sports

Tier 3
NY Jets (Lacrosse means no to baseball and basketball) and Florida High School/College lacrosse teams playing out of state foes

Bottom of the Barrel
The Dolphins, Syracuse Lacrosse, the Rangers, Paul Rabil, the KGB, the CCP and Hamas
Excellent job comparing the Rangers to the KGB, CCP and Hamas! Is it ok if I throw in the University of Michigan with them too?

Good ole Matty Blue Line! Here's my ranking of Islanders that were going to lead us to the promised land that never quite panned out......

5. Josh "The Alarm Clock" Ho-Sang
4. Otto "Does Everything, Accomplishes Nothing" Koivula
3. Griffin "Of Slow Foot" Reinhart
2. Kiefer "Corners" Bellows
1. Michael "Donkey Legs" Dal Colle

Let me know if you think I left someone out......

How in the world are Kirill "Super Smile" Kabanov and Oleg "Never Smile" Kvasha not leading the list?

*And in fairness...Ilya Sorokin might actually be that savior all of them weren't.

But Lou definitely wasn't so based off that any change is a worthwhile risk.
There's no debating a change was needed anymore. I don't know if you still think there is anyone left in Lou's corner, but I don't see them. Not everyone reached the conclusion at the same pace, but appears everyone did get there.

With that being said, I'll remain nervous and skeptical that a first time GM is going to be a stud. Lots of stories about coaches and GMs that failed their first go around only to succeed later. I was hoping we would get a GM that was experienced from the start, not one getting paid by the Islanders to learn the job and make their mistakes now. Owning a business, I know how frustrating it is to have employees like that.

Chyzowski and Chynoweth were supposed to be the post dynasty saviours. And don’t forget Brad Isbister - I remember thinking he was going to be a star power forward. Dark days

I'm not even worried about this. Darche is going to be allowed to run the Isles 2025 NHL Draft. There's no way that Malkin/Collins would not have this covered. Think about it...What if the Lightning stipulated he wasn't allowed to run the Isles draft....Then who would? Lou?

And let's be honest...The same way there is tampering with free agency, there could easily be tampering with Darche "not being a part of the draft," Add in the fact that the Draft is decentralized (meaning that all teams will be at their own headquaarters), and it would be so easy for Darche to run it from anyway.

And on top of all that...We don't pick anywhere near the Lightning (and they only have 1 pick in the 1st 3 rounds), so it would just be petty for them to not allow Darche to be the Isles GM IN FULL from day 1. I just don't think they would do that to him/us, and it's just so unnecessary.
Staple article from the Athletic says Darche will be making the pick.

clean slate ?

My current take:
- Don't see Roy and Duclair working together again. He brought him in. Then he bitchslapped him when he wasn't good enough.
- Any such reset attempt would immediately be endangered as soon as Duclair would get on another cold streak or play inconsistently, two things that have accompanied him at every single step of his career.
- Would never have suspected that Lamoriello of all people would have simply let an active top 9 asset "take time off for personal reasons", so it felt like there's more behind this.
- Duclair disappeared and we didn't hear a thing from him - or after that. Zilch. Nada. Niente. Is it possible that Duclair is actually undergoing mental health treatment of some sort? The public call-out Roy made may have simply been the straw that broke the camel's back.

One way or another, Duclair presents a 3.5 MM-over-3-more-seasons boulder that Darche has to take into consideration.

Among many other tasks.

According to Friedman, Stacy Roest the GM of the Syracuse Crunch (TBL AHL team) has left the team. Not sure why he'd leave unless it's to be AGM somewhere as there are no GM jobs available. And you'd have to think the frontrunner would be coming here, having worked with Darche for 10 years.

Maybe he takes Chris L's Job?

Duclair is his own agent. He probably knows that he's not guaranteed a spot on an NHL team after last season. If that's the case, why would he agree to terminate his own contract and give up 10 Million Dollars?

And from the Isles perspective, isn't' it worth seeing what he can do if he's healthy in what is likely to be a largely explorative season? At the very least it would make a buyout more palatable next year. Worst situation for this upcoming year would be that they have to treat him like they treated Engvall last season.

As far as boulders, I think 3.5x 3 is probably somewhere behind Mayfield, Engvall and Pulock at the least.

I was definitely going to say Kirill Petrov but he was mentioned already, historically I'd like to nominate Scott "No chance" LaChance and Eric "Fish" Fichaud
