New York Islanders: Mathieu Darche is named GM of the New York Islanders

Excited we got Darche. He seemed like a very strong candidate whose only weakness was lack of experience in the position relative to the other candidates. I like that he seemed to really win the job to the point where he not only surpassed the other more established candidates, but now ownership feels we do not need a team president with Darche in charge.

I also respect our ownership seemingly being open-minded on how they wanted to restructure the front office. It might have come off like they were clueless, at least according to the uninformed on social media, but I don't believe that was the case. I think ownership just wanted to cast the net as wide as possible and get the best candidates available in the building for an interview. Ultimately, I think they made the correct choice.

As for Lou's spirit still haunting our building, I wouldn't worry about it. Darche is legit, this guy is smart. We got lucky again today, great month for the franchise.

Yes sir. One of the first NFL games I attended was a playoffs game - Seattle vs Miami in the old Orange Bowl. I hated the Dolphins back then and also Steve Largent was my favorite player at the time. Add in the coolest color scheme in the league and it all stuck.
I do not approve but still love you all the same!

Not really sure of your point here. Are you saying that "Lou haters" are going to be frustrated because they hated when Lou traded 1st rounders...And that's what the Lightning have done the past few years?

I hope that's not what you're saying.
My point is, he is probably the right hire however, during his time with the Lightning, which is the only time he has managing hockey operations, the Lightning haven't drafted or developed a player of consequence. Is that incorrect?

Awwww...Very sweet.

Why don't you approve? I wasn't about to be a Jets fan. I have enough suffering in my life.
I'm just big on remaining a fan of a team in your home city. And for life! It's like a family member- you're not only born with it but stuck for life. For me it's the Isles, Yankees, Giants, Knicks and Ohio State (I went there).

Right, we've seen these agreements before.

We do not have any info on whether this is the case with Darche, however, and ultimately until we do I'm expecting him to be involved at the draft.

We'll see if any info comes out that changes that.
An NHL GM who changes teams before the NHL draft is not permitted to use any knowledge of their old team's strategy, player evaluations, or scouting reports to benefit their new team during the draft. There are rules and practices in place to ensure fair competition and prevent a new GM from having an unfair advantage based on information obtained from their previous team.

Here's why:
  • Confidentiality and Proprietary Information:
Teams and their scouting departments invest significant time and resources in developing player evaluations, scouting reports, and drafting strategies. This information is considered confidential and proprietary.
  • League Rules and Regulations:
The NHL has rules and guidelines that prohibit the use of confidential information from one team to benefit another, particularly in the draft process.
  • Ethical Considerations:
It would be unethical and unfair for a GM to use knowledge of a previous team's draft strategy to gain an advantage in their new role.
  • No Benefit:
While a GM might have a better understanding of the players in the league after working in the NHL, the draft itself is a lottery of sorts, with significant luck involved. The GM's new team would still have to rely on their own scouting and draft process.

Meh-

You live outside not only one of the best cities in the world, but one with always having all the money to spend. Very easy to "remain" a fan. Why not also be a Mets, Nets, and Jets fan since they are in your city as well?

But it's just such a ridiculous claim. Most teams in their Cup window aren't developing players. How many players have the final 4 teams this year developed in the past 3-5 years?

Developing players is what leads to you being a Cup contender. On top of that when you're a Cup contender you're picking in the late 20's each round, of not trading the pick as the Lightning have done, so you have less and less talented prospects in your system.

For anybody who understands French, here's a podcast from June 2024, called La Poche Bleue, with ex-NHL players Maxim Lapierre and Guillaume Latendresse doing a one-hour interview of Mathieu Darche, that they call, between friends, Darchy:

Wow Perif. I'm a Seahawks fan myself. Good to know I got a fellow 12 on the Island.

Well I'm up in Westchester now, but we're 12's nonetheless.

A very short time ago I thought both of my favorite teams were totally lost at sea. Now I have more hope for both than I've had in years. Really generally excited to see how things go this fall...

Yet nowhere does it specify the GM is not allowed to take part in the draft with his new team at all, does it? The confidentiality and proprietary knowledge restrictions are one thing, but again, it doesn't bar participation, unless I'm reading or interpreting it wrong.

Was wondering about this. I know we're not the Leafs in terms of size, money, employees, reach, or fanbase....But they had a full-scale "White House style" press conference today for the MLSE President that was streamed live on Sportsnet...

How come the Islanders can't have a press conference/media room where they do the same, but on the smaller scale? Because in terms of Islanders team news/announcements it doesn't get much bigger than today...And yet we only get a few people on twitter relaying quotes?

Come on Islanders? Do better. Give us a live stream of the announcement.

It's not Memorial Day Weekend in Canada...

I just spent 6-7 hours on the road today, everyone in the Northeast is travelling, relax man!

How can we find out for sure if Darche will be allowed at the draft? If it really is up to the Lightning it would be awefully petty of them to not allow him to fully run it for the Isles.

Why?

The lightning don't have a 1st or 3rd round pick, so only 1 (#56) iin the first 96 picks.

On top of that unless trades are made...The Isles don't have a pick within 14 spots of Tampa in the 1st 3 rounds, so that's a big gap where it would be surprising if the Isles would snipe the guy they wanted.

Yet nowhere does it specify the GM is not allowed to take part in the draft with his new team at all, does it? The confidentiality and proprietary knowledge restrictions are one thing, but again, it doesn't bar participation, unless I'm reading or interpreting it wrong.
Because this is AI, not a text from the NHL, I've been watching hockey since 1972 and have seen many situations like this one, where the incoming GM, President, director of scouting, etc., was not allowed to take part in anything draft-related. It's logical. Now maybe rules have changed....you'll know soon enough.

We'll definitely keep in touch. Would love to talk ball, because I love what the new regime is doing, especially drafting Milroe (I'm a big Alabama fan).

I won't lie, I kind of was hoping for Shanahan. The Leafs are classic chokers, but the talent he brought on was pretty legit. If anything, the Tavares contract really dug them in, and they could've used his money for more.

I love that Darche came from Tampa, and that he knows how to win. I'm curious to see if he can get us ahead in potentially trading for Isaac Howard. That would be neat.

No doubt intrigued at the thought of bringing fresh blood though. I think Darchy can build a solid front office and pull the right strings. The offseason will definitely be fun.

If ChatGPT, Copilot, etc. can't find a specific rule, it's probably because it doesn't exist.

We've all watched hockey for a long time, and I'll do you one better -- the times you're thinking of are likely specific agreements with the previous teams. For example, I can think of Bill Armstrong in 2020 who was director of scouting with the Blues before being hired as GM of the Coyotes, so the teams had an agreement in place that prevented his participation at the draft due to his extensive knowledge of the Blues scouting strategy.

Now, why would they have needed that agreement if there was already a league rule in place?

How's that for logical?

Because I hate the Mets, Nets and Jets!. I liked whoever my father and brother told me to like and it was decreed on day one that would be the Yankees, Islanders, Giants and Knicks. My Aunt Marie had a big part in it too. I'll never forget asking her as a kid "so all the people who were Dodgers fans just became Mets fans?". With pure vitriol she replied "the same pack of slobs!". It was wonderful and I still use it to this day when called upon to compare one group of people I don't like with similarities to another.

He did not bring in any talent. He oversaw who did.

Got my wish, this is the guy I wanted. New, fresh approach. Young. Not a recycled pick. Arrows pointing up Isles fans!
I do like that he is new and fresh even if he sucks ass. It feels better when they suck ass and are new than hiring a re-tread (i.e. Bergevin, Holland, etc.) and having them suck ass.
