New York Islanders: Mathieu Darche is named GM of the New York Islanders

repeating what I said but i'm excited to see what Darche has in store for the Islanders. Definitely a better general manager than Bergevin or Holland, and most likely can do a lot more trades with less. If this team wants to be 100% more analytical, i'm all for it.

If Darche really wants to win over fans, lets see him try to swing a trade for Issac Howard. Islanders have a lack of talent on the LW, and they easily could try to trade for him as well.

Isles overall need a refresh everywhere. Final 4 in 2020 and 2021 but been a borderline team since really.

Should hope he moves out 2-3 vets that were on the roster in those final 4 years. Be it Lee, Pageau, Cziskas, Pelech, Mayfield, Pulloch, etc. Move off Palmeri unless it's at a good price and term.

they probably keep Palms but less money and more "hey, if we suck, you can play for a contender" type deal

Heyyy now, Perif has something to be happy about. That’s the best news (for this board, that is). 😉

Heyyyy now is right.

I only want us to win a Cup, so when I'm happy....We'll all be happy.

But again...

  • Lou HAD to go - Was very happy/relieved that Malkin stepped up and did what NEEDED to be done.
  • I don't think Darche is any type of savior, but...
  • ...To me he was EASILY the best (and most exciting) candidate.
  • And the fact that Malkin OK'd choosing the riskiest choice speaks volumes and makes me trust him further.

None of us know how things are going to turn out, but Malkin/Colins just put some excellent ingredients into the oven.

Sure, but he's 93 years old and lives in Israel. Not sure how fresh his contacts are.

Did you see the new book he has coming out?

It's more entertaining when he's unhappy.

I’m excited too. Fresh blood, seems to have the pedigree, acumen, comes from a winning organization, and less bitching to read about here.

He better get to work ASAP; f*** the holiday weekend! Much work ahead.

I'm very happy to hear this news. I preferred Darche over all of the other rumored candidates.

I'm glad Malkin is making the right choice.
P definitely the most exciting name that was out there. Let’s see what he does. Can’t imagine the leash is very long given his experience level at the GM position. Very surprised we have no POHO. Someone will eventually fill that role. Maybe Collins. Seems like a huge hole right now. Not overly thrilled with how this whole process played out. Too late to think about that stuff anyways. Draft is a month away. UFA right after. They had to move.

Edit: wow they gave Darche EVP too. He’s running everything hockey. Interesting.

Amen. How much better is the mystery/excitement of this offseason now as opposed to Lou still being here and knowing whatever he does will continue to drive us backwards?

Feels like we've survived a brutal winter and spring is here.

Happy with Darche as well.
At least we won't be predictable anymore.
I hope he has the authority for big changes...

This feels weird around here. The last 30 days or so the Isles have had some good news. Still lots of questions for sure moving forward with draft, rfa deals, and hopefully a ufa signing or 2 to bolster PK. Not looking for sexy names, just a smart and manageable deal.

What is Roy doing right now with his coaches to ensure this team has an effective PK and PP? How is he going to light a fire and return Dobson back to a 70 point dman, that cleans up his play in the dzone and plays with some snarl? This is TBD. For now I will enjoy the good news and momentum for this franchise.

“Mathieu is the perfect choice to lead our hockey operations,” Islanders Operating Partner, John Collins said. “He will be given every resource available to put the Islanders first-in-class on the ice, with our business initiatives, and in the community. Mathieu has served as a key member of the Tampa Bay Lightning and has a diverse background in top-level business models. He is a proven winner and is committed, as is our ownership group, to building a group that will be highly competitive next season and beyond.”

I’m a little intrigued by what that last sentence says. They say beyond which which is good that they’re not gonna sacrifice future assets to win now, but I wonder how much they do to improve next season instead of taking a year to bottom out and then recover. I don’t really mind either option but we’ll need to see his first couple moves to see the direction they’ll go.
