I know there isn't any sort of smoke around Barzal getting moved, but he'd be a good fit for Chicago.

The Blackhawks have a fair amount of assets that would be available.

Other than their own 1st round pick, every pick they own in the 2025 draft is on the table. Prospects like Boisvert would be available too. Potentially Korchinski. Obviously the great Seth Jones would be up for grabs as well.

What would it take for Chicago to acquire Barzal?

Seth Jones would look hideous in an Islanders jersey. He’s perfect for Chicago. Like I said, any deal involving the Isles also must include swapping assistant coaches in John MacLean for Derek King.

It'd make sense if the Hawks were a few pieces away from being semi competitive. It makes no sense when you need 2 goalies, 5 defensemen, and 9 forwards lmao.

i scanned the inital post for the letters 'r' 'e' 'i' 'c' 'h' 'e' 'l'. i couldn't find them in the expected order.

i won't change my name to nostradamus.

why is it that as soon as i read this it sounds like a trade Lou would make. Like Lou trading for Jones not necessarily in a barzal trade

Lou would make the move for Jones if he was a pending UFA so he can perform above his skill set and hey a hefty 7 year deal in the offseason. To obtain Seth Jones for Barzal as the main piece is a Peter Chiarelli type of move.

Reichel for Engvall. No take backs.

Nazar would be playing on the islanders if Barzal is traded to Chicago

Yeah. I just don't really see how Chicago could make a deal for Barzal that actually helps the Isles, without including a prospect/young player that would hurt like that. Nazar...maybe Moore+++. But that kind of deal doesn't really make much of any sense with where Chicago is at in their rebuild, and how many more pieces they still really need.

Cap hit matters....
if he's a 60 point winger making 9 million, like there are teams that would consider him has having 0 or negative value.
A young team with lots of cap space that wants to start winning some games, knowing they wont be competing for a cup in a while.... they WILL probably consider him as having positive value.

Remember, a players value is literally defined by what the most giving GM actually offers for him..

The only way I see this happening is if Barzal wants out and the Isles want to completely blow it up. Without getting multiple assets that would either load up on draft capital or completely skyrocket the prospect depth into a top tier system it just doesn’t work.

Probably starts with blackmailing Barzal, as i'd be surprised if Chicago wasn't on his NTC list.

Actually it would start with blackmailing Scott Malkin to either force Lou's hand or replace him altogether, because in case you hadn't noticed...Lou doesn't trade vets - Much less ones he signed to long-term deals.

If Barzal wants out, or if senile Lou has decided he's just not a "Lou type player" and wants to rejig things. Particularly if it comes down to reconfiguring the Isles kind of nasty cap situation.

But yeah...i really doubt it. It just doesn't make any sense.

If Barzal is moved, i think it's gotta at least be some semblance of a "hockey trade" that improves the Isles in some way. They're way too hedged on "compete now" to do a pure futures deal, even if there's a team that could actually absorb Barzal's full cap without moving a good current player back.
