It's that time again, the Isles board is debating dealing Barzal. He's signed for 9.15M for the 7ish years I think. He has an NMC.

Although he's the highest paid player on the team, his effectiveness really requires being paired with another player that already possesses elite offensive IQ - IE, he's not the kind of playmaker that makes average players better. It can be a struggle to find a linemate that excels in with his improvisatory style in the O Zone. He does not drive the net, and his instinct is usually not to shoot.

Despite all of these inefficiencies, he's a PPG player (or better, probably) when circumstances are ideal for him. His effectiveness lies in his puck possession skills, and he's almost a lock to single handedly hem in the opposition in their own end twice in the second period with the long change. He's no slouch back checking and I think he lead the league in takeaways last year. That being said, his defensive impact mostly comes from him carrying the puck for such a long time and not letting the other team have a turn. He is a very very very very very good player, but not the kind of guy who will singlehandedly carry a team, and in a perfect world not the kind that you build your roster around.

Isles would be looking for a shakeup, not a full rebuild. We are set on goaltending defense and would be looking for young goal scorers. Interested in which teams would be interested in acquiring him, and what they have to offer.

Will Smith
Bordeleau

For

Barzal

As much as I dont like Will Smith, he's probably intouchable to our GM now that he's in the NHL. Bordeleau is available.

I'm just looking at the framework of the Hertl trade for this. Hertl ($6.75M) returned Edstrom + Vegas 1st. I think Musty (1st equivalent) + Gushchin (our best AHL scorer) + 2025 2nd (essentially a 1st bc we're the Sharks) is something, but if we have to add, all you have to do is ask
nicely. Also, I think Barzal is not worth 9.0M.

Barzal will be worth his contract going forward.

The cap will go up, and locked in at his age, Barzal will be a proven top 6 player for SJ for a long time.

As far as Smith goes, it's a get for the Islanders if he pans out.

would be a huge risk. will smith is the kind of player that if he lives up to his potential could out value Barzal. it's not a terrible offer

The islanders probably never move him.

If it was me though, I’d be shopping the entire team right now. They have no easy path to retool with all the cap hits they have. I’d be demanding a roster player and blue chip prospect. Maybe something around Jiricek and Jenner with CBJ and unloading a bad contract the other way like Engvall. They need to clear up some space and bring in some youth.

Nah, Jenner isn’t going anywhere. We don’t really need Barzal either.

Maybe I went a little too hard on the Barzal negatives lol. Jenner and jiricek is pretty far from what I’d consider fair value.

FWIW, (and I’m sure it hasn’t reached the rest of the hockey world because we’re small market) Engvall got the message and has been great since the call up. It always comes in waves with him but his 3M contract isn’t the type of thing we’re bending backwards to move

Wouldn't work for Montreal as they are sky-high on Hutson, and for good reason.

And they also would have trouble fitting Barzal in their lineup right now considering they added Patrik Laine to their team and still are waiting on a couple of contracts to end (Dvorak and Armia this year, Price next) plus some maturing for their young players before they start making any huge moves, pursuing FAs, and more.

Rossi, Yurov + salary for Barzal? I'd say Kaprizov + Barzal would be an interesting duo. The same age as well.

But I'm not a Wild fan so it's hard to say will they love it...

If during the season, Barzal to the Sabres for Quinn, Kulich and cap going back (Zucker or something).

A good young winger and a young C with a lot of potential who can play W until Horvat or Nelson aren't on the team.

Cozens can then play either C or W as they'll have Thompson, Barzal, Cozens, McLeod and Krebs as their Cs. Or Barzal plays on Thompson's wing.

Robertson and Dallas supposedly far apart on contract negotiations- Dallas finally resolves their RD hole.

I have no idea whether this actually works for NYI.

Yeah there’s obviously need to be some sweetener but I think people are sleeping on Jiricek a bit. 6’3 RD with a draft pedigree. Size and pedigree did a lot for Pierre Luc Dubois lol.
