He said he didn’t see it, but my post was referring to the people on this board who are still debating it multiple days later when nothing Cronin said was even offensive

Oh my bad. Not offensive but sloppy and careless is how I’d describe it. For a coach whose #1 job is to communicate effectively it looks pretty bad. Cronin also seems to get “misquoted” a lot, not by the media by his own doing. Needs to think about the implications of stuff that comes out of his mouth. He’s not an assistant coach or even an AHL coach anymore.

Eh, I agree it was sloppy, but I wouldn't say communication is his #1 job. His #1 job is to make these guys better hockey players. Communicating WITH THE PLAYERS is a big part of that. Communicating with the media is not. If he says something to the media that might cause a stir in the locker room, he'll need to address it, but communicating with the media is not something that coaches need to be good at to be effective. Look at Darryl Sutter and Bill Belichick.

Well communication is a large part ofmaking them better. It’s one of the most important things for a coach or any boss imo.

on the media thing, he should still be accurate and precise and he wasn’t here. Those guys are great coaches and can kind of get away with it but I still don’t think they’d be sloppy like that., Cro is a 2nd year guy who hasn’t done a ton really at any level so expecting good communication with the media isn’t really too much to ask for. We might just disagree too. Certainly wouldn’t be the first time haha

I agree with the bolded completely.

Where we disagree is that communicating with the media is anywhere near as important. It's also not the same skillset. Guys can be great communicators and motivators in a practice setting or in a team meeting but be terrible when having to speak extemporaneously to the media in a completely different context.

I love coaching and take communication with my players very seriously. Thankfully, as a high school water polo coach, I am never called upon to speak to the media. I would be terrified and would probably be awful at it.

Cronin’s primary job in the context of interactions with the media is to be accurate. I don’t care about how suave or eloquent he is in front of the camera but the veracity of stuff he says.

I’m not saying coaches should be comfortable in front of reporters like that and speak like a politician. For me it really doesn’t take much imo to be good with the media, I’m not expecting him to be Jon Cooper, but he’s gotta do a lot better than this.

So maybe it’s not important in the context of coaching players, but it’s still very important that material that’s put out there is accurate and doesn’t cause any unnecessary drama especially since I don’t think he actually meant that. I expect that from coaches and see The importance.

To us average Joes who don't have to speak to the media it isn't relevant. But if your job includes speaking to the media like a politician, entertainer, athlete, etc, then it really does matter that you communicate effectively with the media when you do. The ramifications don't allow you to just pretend like it doesn't matter.

Except what he said was accurate. Mason McTavish has been playing essentially as a third line center. He probably shouldn't have said it the way he did, but it wasn't untrue.

If Cronin's communicating well to the team (and I have no idea if he is, although there's plenty of evidence that he might not be), I don't care about what he says to the media. As long as it's not grossly inaccurate or completely inappropriate, who cares? I care about the product on the ice.

I don't think Cronin is the right guy for the job, but I think this is a big nothing-burger.

That’s your interpretation of what he meant but it’s unclear if he meant it like “ I think that’s his upside.” Regardless still sloppy, which I think it’s important not to be.

But our larger disagreement is just the importance of speaking coherently to the media. A2d

He did not say “Mac’s a 3rd line guy right now”. He said “Mac’s a 3rd line guy”

You can interpret as you wish. The issue is that McTavish might have had his own interpretation

Seems like this time it didn’t matter, but it’s still a pretty stupid thing to say

Why not say “at this juncture, Mac’s a 3rd line guy for us. He has the skill to be much more than that as he progresses” ?

it’s just another thing that leads me to believe he’s not a critical thinker

To me it's another thing that leads me to believe he's not a good speaker to the media. It's possible to be a poor media communicator and a good communicator with the team. It sounds like Cronin went to McTavish and explained what he meant. McTavish can either believe that or not, or he can care or not. It sounds like McTavish didn't care; at least, that's what he's saying publicly.

I think the problem is that Cronin isn't a good enough coach or communicator with the team. This stuff is just icing on the crap cake.
 
Mac said he didn't see it and doesn't care so no big deal, move past it. But that doesn't mean Cronin should be so carefree with what he says in the future, I hope it registers to him that his words carry meaning, the next guy might not be so thick-skinned. Just use common sense Cronin.

I do wish one of the players would refer to him as an ahl level coach... Just for the laughs

I’m not offended on his behalf. I’m saying it very easily could have been interpreted a certain way if he did read the quote

I don't think calling a throwaway comment meaningless (the subject of which doesn't even care) is being contrarian. You can dislike Cronin as the Ducks coach and also think this is a whole lot of nothing.
 
Has looked really good lately. He had the intangibles all along to make it work. He’s very driven and has all the tools. He’s going to be a very good player for a long time.

hHe will still have some lows and at times consistency issues this season, but we recognize those because we see how high he can push the ceiling of expectations at times and he’s still so young.
