So what is the explanation for how Marchment, in his age 29 season, has improved this drastically over one summer?

He's a better shooter, passer, skater, has better awareness, is more defensively responsible... you just can go on down the line.

His line has great chemistry but it can't all be chalked up to that. Duchene and Seguin have been good, but in the past they were clearly dragging Marchment around and now he's a full-fledged equal contributor who is just as likely to generate offense himself. Did he absorb all of these skills through osmosis? I'm baffled.

Pretty much everyone grumbled about his contract at some point, myself included; now he's massively outperforming it and it doesn't feel like a lucky streak.

Seems to have improved his balance tremendously over the offseason somehow. A force on the puck

He's always had underrated skill/passing tho imo and Duchene has constantly praised Marchment defensively. Biggest difference for me is him staying on his feet and outmuscling everybody

Not sure myself cause yeah the four year contract seemed a bit much; but actually I was one who loved the signing.

“Bambi on ice” isn’t a problem anymore and that goal he scored today was incredible, his confidence as well as his game is on.

Idk maybe in his first season here the contract seemed like a bit of a mistake but it was already worth last season .

On topic there's no way he'd have been able to keep his balance on that backhand goal last year and especially not in his first season here.

He just steadily keeps improving. year by year and hey.

iirc the offseason he signed with us his father unexpectedly passed. no telling how long the effects of something like that might show up on ice.

a lot of soul searching. actual missed time in prep/workouts. questioning if it's worth it to be away from your family for the time it takes to be a productive player. for a lot of folks substance abuse. who knows?

there's a human inside of those sweaters n buckets.

Marchment, at his worst, takes the dumbest most unnecessary penalties, but they always seemed to be related to his inability to keep his emotions in check and just play through the bullshit. He seems to be more in control of his emotions and hasn't been getting baited into stupid shit as much so far this season.

I have no way to quantify this, but I think you're underestimating how chemistry with linemates and comfort with a team in general can really bring out the best in players, especially when they're coming into a new environment after such a loss like he had just before signing.

I really hope he can keep it up and pull a Marchand with his career.

He's been great so far and in previous years has shown flashes of underrated skill. However, he seemed to lack consistency and took way too many stupid penalties. It's difficult to say what is different about this year, as it's likely many factors but most likely some combination of confidence, line chemistry, and offseason skills/conditioning.
