Absolutely. The tradition and identity of the Bruins as a hard working tough team is what got me into them in the first place.

Me too (I mean, that and being from NH lol). But for all the hard work and toughness of the 70s and 80s, they won fook all and I think majoring too heavily on that identity has hurt the team more often than it has helped.

I don't remember clearly enough if Bellows was asking for a big contract from whoever drafted him and teams knew it. Different days back then, but in my recollections I am sure that Bellows was not considered a Bruin type of player for all his talent. And as an aside (because this is a Lohrei thread ) but Doug Gilmour was a 7th! rounder in that draft.

Lohrei is going to be a good one for us. I'll take a pre-eye injury Bryan Berard level out of him, and I think his production gets there, so not bad for a second rounder.

Time will tell. The D side is coming along and there is room and time for improvement. If he was as bad as you say, he would be in the AHL, offensive skills notwithstanding. As for the slapper, well, who in the league has a great one from the blueline that they use regularly? It doesn't seem to be part of the skillset of defensemen these days as a general rule.

It cannot be harped on too much - the biggest problem with the Bruins historical identity is continually running headlong into the toilet seats.

Sweeney hasn't had to deal with that degree of difficulty. That should be tacked to the bottom of his list of accomplishments in any comparison to his predecessors.

If he can manage to get even a slightest bit better on the defensive side of things, he’s going to be a great puck moving top 4 dman. I’ve had doubts about him too this season and I’ve even called for him to spend more time in providence but he’s easily the best at moving the puck among all bruins defenseman.

Oh I know, the hated Habs, the Islanders dynasty, the Oilers dynasty. It was always a tough road for the Bruins in the 70s and 80s, but I still believe that at times they could have majored a bit more on the 'soft' skilled side and helped themselves out.

How many dee can score on a decent NHL goalie from a shot from the point now a days?
It doesn't happen.
Lohrei is exactly what this team needs, a player with some skill and decent skating.
His stick handling / toe drag / passing are above average.
He needs work in his own zone and needs to take the body more, that should come with more playing time and when he gets stronger.

I've seen him take more slapshots in the past month than any other Boston D all season.

I'm not too worried. You can teach a big offensively gifted player to play defense if they buy in to the system and learn it front to back. I don't see him ever being intentionally put out there in the final minute with a lead but I anticipate he won't hurt them anywhere as much in the coming seasons as he did this year

yeah , he has really exploded this year, I fully expect him to take another leap next year and get up to an around 50 point player

I get that everyone's in a tizzy over the Zadorov fight last night, but what's being overlooked is how much Mason Lohrei has improved over the season. I thought he was outstanding last night. The kid is really gaining confidence and turning into a weapon for us on the point. He's also beginning to minimize the defensive brain farts as the season progresses.

I was really hoping to see him show some growth this season, and I'll admit that I was a little worried about him up through January, but over the past month he's really made some good progress.

I think this kid's a keeper.

Mason has the potential to be a heart and soul player. He is the most confident player with puck we have after Pasta. Finger crossed that he improves his defense game and his straight line speed. He has huge potential to be a special player.
