Player Discussion Mason Lohrei

I'm rooting for this kid. I love his unique skill set. We really don't have other d that can carry the puck and gain the blue line like he can. We need players that can create offense and he does from the back end and in the offensive zone. He seems poised as well. He doesn't really cost us anything yet. Patience with him and live with the gaffes.

Had to look up the mistake that Lohrei made, thought there's no way it's that bad. My god that was so stupid, peewee-level is a great description of it.

off of @sarge88 's question on lohrei...how much do you think he's getting on the next contract?
good time for him to be a RFA, eating 22+ minutes a night and running PP1

29th in D-men scoring since mid-November. When you consider how he's playing with the most offensively challenged forward group in the NHL, makes it even more impressive.

He's still working through the defensive aspect of the game, but offensively he's got all the tools to be a top point producing D-man in this league.

I did not expect Lohrei to hit the ground running with his offense in the NHL. Would've bet good money he'd need a development period of 1-2 seasons.

Picking up a giant, bona fide offensive defenseman (in his second draft eligible year for god's sake) with a super late 2nd rounder is a huge win.

Sweeney should still be shown off the stage, but he can take a bow for this one before departing.

The injury to H. Lindholm and the team struggles during the season gave Lohrei an opportunity to log a lot of development time. If the team and injuries were better he could have been in Providence.

I appreciate his offensive prowess but still cringe at some of his decision making in the defensive zone. But he has gotten better with all the ice time.

Are you old enough for the Thelven days? I loved him. Mainly because I had a Park 22 jersey as a kid, but he was pretty steady.
Bruins got absolutely screwed by injuries on D around that era. Thelven (I loved him as well - solid and tough), Kluzak, poor Jonathan Girard.......

That was going to be one impressive D corp.

He needs a Michael Thelven

I think he'd be better off with a solid two-way guy. Like a Devon Toews or a Filip Hronek. Pairing Lohrei with a true stay-at-home defensive guy limits what you can get out of him. You need all 5 guys in on the action in the offensive zone.

In the long-run, I see him as McAvoy's partner. But his defensive play needs to get better first to be able to throw him out there to defend top offensive players.

He was too expensive for Harry's liking.

I don't remember clearly enough if Bellows was asking for a big contract from whoever drafted him and teams knew it. Different days back then, but in my recollections I am sure that Bellows was not considered a Bruin type of player for all his talent. And as an aside (because this is a Lohrei thread ) but Doug Gilmour was a 7th! rounder in that draft.

Lohrei is going to be a good one for us. I'll take a pre-eye injury Bryan Berard level out of him, and I think his production gets there, so not bad for a second rounder.
