Player Discussion Mason Lohrei

I don't disagree that there are people who think that way. People don't like Brazeau because he's not physical. I'm not saying that prejudice doesn't exist, I'm saying the criticism of Lohrei's defensive game is fair and justified.

This isn't a case where Hal Gill is actually a good defensive defenseman and people just can't see it because he doesn't hit. Lohrei is not a good defensive defenseman and it's fair to point that out.
The problem lies I. That you have too many of these type of player that don’t lean into guys. They have a roster full. They’re priority when chasing the puck is to poke it free instead of both taking the body and then look for the puck. Look at the way Toronto is playing. They are now doing that. They outplayed the Bruins by being physical.

Oesterle and Wotherspoon may be veterans, but they are barely above stiff level.

Bruins biggest need right now is creativity, not a veteran presence on D.
Not sure its the biggest need, but its definitely a need. Creative players like Pasta (and yes Lohrei) often try to make something out of nothing. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't. But I'll take that any day over players that make nothing out of something.

Same here. Bruins have enough of those bolded types already. Lohrei will get it; he's just a project guy that in different circumstances would probably still be in the AHL growing the defensive side. He's improving by bits, two steps forward one step back kind of thing.

There was a Florida push when he blocked a shot, Swayman was out of position and he blocked the 2nd shot with his stick and saved a goal. Even the announcers mentioned it.

The main point should be what else can you do with him other than play him now? True, in a perfect world he may have needed to develop in the AHL more, but he can't now because he'd have to go on waivers and would be picked up quicker than a $20 bill on the sidewalk. That's on management, not Lohrei. So the only choices are him playing, rotting in the stands, or being traded.

Agreed but the immediate play before was him giving up the puck in a high danger area to allow that shot in the first place ...he created the problem then thankfully rectified it

Just gonna have to let him work thru it and hope he learns with reps. Think he has the highest ceiling amongst the under 25 crew.

Sure dude, I own a company that employees 25 people for 40 years so yes Im dumb as a rock lol

Do you need a job?

That's nothing personal
You need to try harder then. You do yourself a disservice with some of the things you post.

Good on the job, thanks.

One line of top end elite players went to town on the Bruins that night. That's why they won.

Bruins leads the NHL in hits. Are they not physical enough? How do they lead the league in hits if they have a roster full of player who don't lean into guys?

The answer is somehow always to get more physical. One of the worst goal scoring teams and somehow getting more physical is the answer to that problem...

He's 4-5 years away from being finished product, physically and mentally. He's what 21YO. Sure, some pro athletes put it together at that age, but plenty don't.
I've always believed defensemen take the longest to get it. Doug Hamilton was ALL offense when he came in, not physical, didn't like being asked to be more than the next great offensive defensemen and eventually asked out. He matured into a top 20 all around D-man with a big lean toward offense.
Let's see what Lohrie is at 24-25 and learning here will get him there faster, painful as it is at time.

Ripped Schmidt away from McAvoy yesterday, and somehow Schmidt took the extra penalty even after Frederic came in to take Schmidt off Lohrei

Boston had a third man in, twice, Florida gets an extra 2 lol.

Anyway, loved that he inserted himself into the scrum like that. More of that please

Not sure about any stats but another possible way to look at it is if they are hitting more than any other team, they don't have the puck as much, and are checking more than other teams to try to get the puck back. Which is not necessarily a good stat.

Its an opinion board don't take what I say as mater of fact

I only get defensive ( I know I shouldn't ) when I feel under attack. I say some stupid shit but name one poster that hasn't :) And don't say you.

He's going to be something some day. He's going to put up 40+ points this year, by accident. Without lots of ice time, without a defined role other than stop doing stupid shit.

If he ever gets to the point where we see his full offensive game merge with a Carlo-esque defensive game he's going to be a top10 D in the game. Long way to go on the defensive side but lots to be excited about with this kid.
He needs to clean up things defensively but certainly has some high upside on offense.

That is certainly part of it no question. But it still a indicator that up front they are a physical team when compared to the rest of the league. Doesn't mean they are getting the most out of their physical play like some other teams do.

Their issue is they have a harder time keeping the physical tempo going where they are slow group overall and are challenged to win puck races for dump ins, one reason they need more speed up front. The faster teams appear more physical as they get in on the forecheck quicker than Boston does, spend more time in the offensive zone.

The D could be more physical overall up considering they've added Peeke and Zadorov in the past 12 months, they've worked toward adding that element in the back-end.

It was Greer not Schmidt but yeah that was a bizarre call - good for us but it made no sense to give AJ the extra 2 there.

And I agree, nice to see Lohrei mixing it up and defending his teammates. He's a big kid, probably still learning how to use his size. Hopefully he keeps progressing in that area.

That's not what "3rd man in" is at all. There has to be an active fight.

I guess the refs thought Greer got too exuberant with two different players? Should have taken Lohrei off, too, though. That would have made more sense to me.

I never say stupid shit. I pretty much spew stupid shit. Like a volcano!

We’re good.

I believe Greer threw a few punches while they where being tied up with linesman

Growing pains but his game is to have the puck more on his stick making things happen. He will get it, Larry Robinson said it takes about 200 games before you really know what you have. We have to take the good over the bad as no one else is going to carry the puck that much.
