This quote from Feige is interesting...

“I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it,” Feige said in a statement. “Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.”

To me, it sounds like they're hinting at the future possibility of Spidey having solo films with Sony, but still being allowed to cross back over to the MCU for crossovers.

As I said:

According to the release Holland’s Spidey can also be in the Sony Spiderverse.

Sounds like Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness just took a new turn.

SM3 comes out in July 2021. Before that we have Black Widow and Eternals that he’s not in, no way. Maybe he’s in Shang Chi but doubtful. He’s not in Thor. That leaves Strange 2, which by name states it’s about multiverses.

I'm actually a little surprised. I could see reasons why both parties may have stood their ground.

One interesting part is that Marvel now has four films slated for 2021. They're spread out fairly well, but, if there was ever going to be Marvel fatigue, that will be the year. I think they'll probably be fine, but the idea that one franchise can produce four high grossing films in one year is still something that is such an outlier.

2017-2018-2019 had 3 each, so yea while another massive movie is a big deal, its certainly doable. Its possible they want casual fans to stay as interested as possible now that the pallbearers of the franchise, Stark & Cap, are gone. & as of now, they aren't necessarily building up to two final movies like they were from 2008-2018.

If you put into perspective, between November 2017 and November 2018 you had Ragnarok, Black Panther, IW, Ant Man 2.

2021 will be interesting because you have a Feb release & November release but in between you have May/July releases so thats where fatigue could possibly set in. Just when one is leaving the box office you'll have another thrown right back at you.

I would love it if they could find a way to "logically" shuffle Spider-Man out of the MCU and back into some semblance of a solo universe. Spidey is one character who I have always viewed as his own independant thing.

Very happy to hear this news anyway. Spidey is kind of my big thing so without him (but especially without a logical exit) I just don't really care about the MCU too much.

This also probably means more MCU costumes in Spider-Man 2 for (presumably) Playstation 5! :vhappy:

Interesting to see some of the details coming from this.

Per Deadline, Disney is not just getting 25% profit, but they are also doing 25% co-financing. That detail was added in later but is a big deal. People originally believed the co-financing offer was why Sony turned it down.

Also, this was Disney's original offer in August, before Sony turned it down. For some reason, Disney then offered 50/50, and both sides ended up walking away after that. Then for some reason, they came back to this agreement. Interesting.

All I am hoping for is almost like a live action spiderverse scene where Tobey, Garfield and whatever other universal spiderman/woman shows up!

Not surprised. I really couldn't imagine Spiderman basically kicking off Phase 4 and then having the movies just pretend he never happened.

Yeah that was worst case scenario for all involved and would only hurt both franchises moving forward.

I am presuming this is kind of an "exit strategy" deal that will enable them to split the brands in a logical and story driven way.

Sony would also be at risk of MCU fans boycotting Sony Spidey. Like you said, this is the best case scenario.

I wouldn't call it a "boycott", but yeah I would be 100% less interested in a solo Spidey verse that just pretends the MCU stuff never happened. That would just be dumb. It would be nearly impossible to take Tom Holland's Spider-Man seriously.

Sure maybe you wouldnt boycott but some people would. I have a few IRL friends who were ready to boycott and used that word specifically.

I can't lie, I would have still 100% gone to the next installment of Spider-Man, because I love Tom Holland. Maybe Sony would have screwed it up, but I wasn't going to pre-determine that I already disliked it.

That said, I'm glad he's back in the MCU, even If it's just to basically put a finishing touch on his arc. However, I heard an interesting suggestion from someone earlier today that I realllly like. Since he had a solo movie and a crossover movie in this deal, you could have him lead the Young Avengers in the crossover movie, and then have him "part ways" at the end, where they don't need him anymore, but the door is always open again. No idea if they plan to do Young Avengers, but they are setting up that possibility, and I'd totally be down for it. I like that idea a lot more than him leading the actual Avengers.
