Losing in round #1 annually makes a team Pretenders and what should be learned and taken away is major changes required, you not close at all if you can't win 4 games but you need 16 .

Losing in the SCF makes you a contender and what should be learned and taken away is you're close and a few tweaks might be the difference to put you over the top.

Minor tweaks to a Pretender makes you a slightly different Pretender.

Major changes are coming in TO thank goodness.

1) New Coach
2) New Starting Goalie (Samsonov & Murray out)
3) New Defense Core (as many and 3-4 new players (Brodie, Giordano, Liljegren and some of TD rentals out) .. Big, Mean, and Mobile defenders brought in Zadorov, Tanev, etc.
4) Hopefully Marner (out) and new rebuild assets in. Too much $$/Cap in too few forwards/players ..
5) New System - From Run and Gun (regular season style) to Dump and Chase (playoff style).

That is going to be a good start to turning this thing around.
Post of the thread so far. I'm sick of the Participation Trophy Crew.

Win, or die tryin'.

just 15 more days until his signing bonus is paid off and we can seriously start trade negotiations with other teams.

Is it July 1st yet?

Shanahan has been way too patience, and he has no eisdom imo……..
Shanahan's been protecting his easily earned income because the MLSE Board couldn't care less about winning and is more concerned about upholding woke values.

Yet they hired Pelley. Soon to be seen if the New Boss is the same as the Old Boss.

I recall when Babcock tried to implement a dump and chase system; the team quit on him and didn't wanna play that way. And people all over the net were kissing dubas' ass and "zone entries" and BS/60 stats.

I wonder if the same mob starts whining when Berube implements such a system from the get go; also I wonder whether the team will respond to such a system as a complete "buy in" or there will be whining like there was against babcock
Either buy IN or pack your bags and get OUT !!

Only 2 viable option exist if Winning is the only priority.

The time has come where the Inmates will no longer be running the Asylum..

Berube will bring in a system that drastically reduces offense while emphasizing defensive responsibilities. Marner will request a trade realizing he won't get $12 million per year.

Not so sure this year, I don't see Edmonton putting up a fight, let alone beating any of the top teams in the East.

None the less, they still beat us in a 7 game series and are far closer than we are to winning.
Here is the proof and difference 5 of the top 10 scorers in the NHL playoffs are Oilers.

They're also proof that "Defense wins Championships" and "Good teams are built from the Goalie Out, through strong team defense ... "

No matter how hard you try to outscore your weaknesses, its a flawed strategy, simple start with sound goaltending and your path will

Remember our Leafs nearly got swept by Florida last year in round #2 and Panthers came back better and stronger and wiser now.

Treliving, Berube are on the same page when it comes to ‘accountability’

For better or for worse, Brad Treliving and Craig Berube are on the same page when it comes to how they want the Toronto Maple Leafs to look.

This may seem like a prerequisite for running a hockey team, but the Leafs have had to work without that advantage a couple of times in the Auston Matthews era. It became clear almost instantly after Kyle Dubas was named general manager that his vision of the team didn’t align with Mike Babcock, with the two only working together for a little over a year. It popped up this season, as well. After years of having top-end talent supported by low-event, strong defensive players with good possession numbers, Sheldon Keefe had to figure out how to construct a roster with a different style of supporting cast from Treliving.

When Treliving took over as general manager last offseason and signed players to the effect of Tyler Bertuzzi and Max Domi in free agency, he emphasized the need for players who bring “snot” and “piss and vinegar” to the team, and cited the importance of having players who can elevate their game in the playoffs. He alluded to this again in the team’s end-of-season press conference, discussing how the team needed to figure out a way to do the “unsexy” things better. That’s not to say Keefe wasn’t aware of those issues or that he was hopeless when it came to fixing them, but in the end, a team will usually operate better when the general manager has his own, hand-picked head coach, and that’s why Berube will be behind the bench next season.

“We want to be a North team, we want to be fast, we want to be a heavy team.” coach Craig Berube

The North-South style of hockey plays into this. Some might point at the “heavy” part of this quote and raise concerns over how slow of a team the Leafs were this year. While true, part of that is the style you play. Playing heavy doesn’t mean loading your team up with a bunch of players who weigh over 200 pounds. It means finishing your checks, wearing out your opponent and making it tougher for them to do their job, and finding a way to score those unsexy goals. Even though they didn’t advance past the first round this season, they improved in those categories, and adding someone like Berube will only help in that department.

Marner is simply a square peg in a round hole as to how the Leafs want to play under Treliving\Berube ... His time has come and its time to GO !!!

Berube wants to play a heavy physical game where players wear out the opposition and finish their checks, and willing to play in traffic and score greasy goals crashing the blue paint.

He wants this nonsense of East-West figure skating style run and gun, to become North-South dump and chase and winning puck battles during the regular season not begin once the playoffs start.

He wants accountability from his players to play his system, which usually means low scoring tight checking and defense first awareness not last goal wins pond hockey.

Marner is the equivalent of bringing a knife to a gun fight and the sooner he realizes this the sooner this team can more forward with players willing to go to battle, not sit on the bench and whine and cry and toss their gloves, because the big bad opposition isn't allowing your soft, free skating perimeter game without time and space to be successful, thus relegating you to simply becoming a very expensive passenger come playoff time.

Incompetence.

All teams operate under same rules, although no-tax states provide an advantage, but that is only since 2005ish.

Same Salary Cap limits for all = equal playing surface for all. Spending harder not smarter is the Leafs problem, because money doesn't buy you a Cup, hard work and effort does.

Canadian teams like the Leafs shouldn't let player greed come between their objective of winning the Cup.

If a players #1 priority is his own pay cheque and not finishing each check , while putting team success before personal wealth and gain, then go find your pot of gold elsewhere, because that conflicts with the objective of hoisting the sterling silver Cup.

Marner's biggest problem isn't even his greed, because even if he was making millions less a season, he still wouldn't be any more effective come playoff time, because its his style of play not his amount of pay that is the root of his problem.. A leopard never changes it spots !!!

Even in Marner was making $8 mil and not $11 mil he still would have produced only 1 goal and 3 measly playoff points. Rookie Matthew Knies playing on his ELC @ $925k contract scored 2 goals and matched his 3 points. So you don't need Marner, and you certainly don't need to pay him $11 mil or more on his next contract. You have a player personnel problem not a money problem to solve here.

marner likely is the least north-south player on their team.

Mitch Marner is still aToronto Maple Leaf for now. Excited to see who comes back for him in trade.

Remember Mitch, if you love the team and are not best for the team. You leave the team. Pretty sure he reads HFBoards.

Agreed about their obsession with woke crap, they should focus on building a cup worthy team and let the left eat itself with their woke agenda……….

One can hope, but I have little faith ownership has winning as their top priority, it’s all about money with this lot……….

Exact scenario I see unfolding, I’m really hoping this was communicated to Mitch in their coffee talk a couple of weeks ago………
