Marner or Rantanen for your team?

Rantanen has more of a physical presence, and has been a better playoff performer so-far.

Where as Marner creates his own offense better, and is a better defensive player with PK ability.

I like both. But I'd pick Marner between the two.

The poster above me who said it basically depends on whether the team is pushing for the playoffs at all or is already going to cruise to the playoffs and is looking for someone to help them push deep into the playoffs is pretty much where I am between the two players. Utah falls into the former category, so I'd take Marner.

...Habs are in the same boat, so I begrudgingly take Marner...a Caufield - Suzuki - Marner line would be sick to watch...

Unpopular opinion: neither

Massive question marks around Marner’s ability to perform during the most important part of the season and in Rantanen’s ability to produce when he’s not joined at the hip to MacKinnon.

If I’m a GM I’m not paying $100M and crossing my fingers that one of these guys will figure it out and prove the critics wrong. Can see how it would be worth it if you’re a fan of a team like Utah though.

Assuming that both Marner and Rantanen come in at the same AAV and term, what player would you take on your team? This is in the case that they make it to free agency unsigned by their current teams.

As of right now Marner is tied 4th in the NHL with McDavid with 73 points, and Rantanen is at 67 points sitting at 11th. Marner is 27 yo and Rantanen is 28. Both players in their prime.

What player are you taking on your team and why?

I'm not i leaf fan, but I read on here even from some leaf fans that Marner disappeared in the playoffs. Point per game plus great penalty killer seems pretty good to me. Id take the all round hockey player any day

Yeah you’re right. Look at his splits in games 1 thru 4 vs games 5-7 and they tell the whole story

To be fair, I think the ‘17 and ‘22 first round series only went 6 games, and the FL series went 5 (noted in chart)

That’s a 74 vs 101 pt pace in the post season… it’s not close.

Especially when the defensive game of Marner hasn’t been great in the playoffs either

Personally would stay away from both in the offseason. Great players that are about to get absolutely disgusting money.

I actually think Marner is better on the whole but gun to my head I'd take Rantanen. His puck protection and hands around the net is the type of game you need to change a tight playoff series.

Marner for me. I find he’s more capable of carrying his own line. Good penalty killer as well, unique talent. I could see the argument for Mikko due to size and playoff performances, but I just prefer Marner’s skillset.
