Assuming that both Marner and Rantanen come in at the same AAV and term, what player would you take on your team? This is in the case that they make it to free agency unsigned by their current teams.

As of right now Marner is tied 4th in the NHL with McDavid with 73 points, and Rantanen is at 67 points sitting at 11th. Marner is 27 yo and Rantanen is 28. Both players in their prime.

What player are you taking on your team and why?

Mikko and the Canes wee kind of due....Not shocked about tonight but i'm taking Marner.....

He can take over as a playmaker and fuel a team like few others................

I think Marner would take a lot of the bottom teams or decent teams into the playoffs and Rantanen would be better suited for a contender, maybe not for all bottom teams or contenders but generally speaking

Assuming you make the playoffs and want an X-factor to put you over the top, Rantanen's playoff pedigree is a lot more attractive. But if you're still trying to make it to the dance and want to point to Marner's production from October to April, I'm not going to fight you. These guys are talented as hell and you win either way (just not at the same time of year.)

Building a team from scratch, I'd take Marner. He just does so much for a team. Plays in all situations including the penalty kill, brings lots of speed and he's basically a 100 point player. One of those weird cases where he doesn't have a 100 point season but ever since he started playing 20 minutes per game back in 18-19, he's put up 1.22 PPG (=100/82 games).

But if I already have good pieces in place, particularly a play driver, then I'd take Rantanen.

Pretty balanced opinion.

Rantanen's goal scoring touch is certainly a better offensive weapon when you already have Mackinnon commanding the puck 75% of the time he's on the ice, on top of having the size to grind out games in corners as well.. On a team from square 1 though - Marner will be a far better piece.

Rantanen is slumping and Marner just came off the biggest goal and assist of his career.
