Proposal: Marner or Bennett+Ehlers?

At the same cost which would you prefer?

Heard this debate at the end of today’s CHGO podcast. Jay and Mario agreed from the start that Marner would be their ideal UFA signing this offseason. Someone asked the hypothetical that if Sam Bennett + Nikolaj Ehlers could be had for the same cost what they’d prefer. They seemed to struggle there.

So assuming the cost is exactly the same which would you rather do?
 
Ehlers would be fine depending on his cap.

NO on Bennett. His game is going to fall off quick, possibly before we'd even make the playoffs.

Yes on Marner, been pretty consistent that I think we should shoot our shot with him.

If it's between MM or both of these, easy decision. It's Marner.

Depth will come, impact is needed. Having said that, I don't want to be paying Marner anywhere near $14M for the next 7 seasons. If we want Marner, draft Hagens.

You simply can't pay Marner 14M. Can't happen. Becomes a contract you'll have to pay to get rid of the second it's signed.

Mitch Marner all day long and twice on Sunday. First his game more likely ages well. I see Marner being an impact player at 34 (year 7 of a max deal) but have a real hard time seeing Ehlers or for sure Bennett not falling off a cliff the last 2-3 years of a 7 year deal.

Ehlers isnt that great in d-zone so probably wont help Bedard! Bennet will fall off a cliff hard so cant see Hawks giving him the term he is looking for.

Marner makes most sense as winger for Bedard if only these are available. Will be interesting to see if he will be ufa and what kind of money he is going to get.

Marchand is interesting choise could look great on Bedards wing for couple of years!

Where do you picture Nelson?? I think Hawks want Bedard, Nazar as 1C-2C or do you think they drop Nazar to 3C?? Just to easy him in??
 
I guess if you have to choose, Marner. But I'd choose neither as well actually.

Marner and Ehlers are perimeter players which we really don't need next to our smaller skilled guys. Ehlers doesn't even defense so big no no. Love Bennett and he would be awesome for the first few years, but after his contract could become an anchor.

2 is better than 1...

Hawks need 2 proven top six forwards to add to the 2 we have now plus you hopecto get Misa to make it 5 out of 6 core top six spots filled.

Maybe Marnerxwoukd click with Bedard better than eother Ellerslie or Bennet would but IF we do not get to add Misa, then the 2 instead of 1 ufa forward becomes eve a greatervi.perarove.

Consider tge Hawks gettibg double wrangled and only getting the #4pick...At that point adding Ellerslie and Bennet becomes very very important. To getget t forward group upto the standard we need.

At #4 You take guys with risks and flaws and uncertainties of how moch imoact they make..

But imagine if you took Brady Martin at #4higher than the teens rankibgs have for him..

Imagine a libe of Martin Nazar and Ellerslie...itcwoukd be tge fastest lube in the league by a kongshot..You woukdcgetcso may break-aways and 2 on1s like you never saw any line getbeforein nhl history..Martin is such a high conpete..high oace high work ethic giyvwho creates chances forchomeslfcand kibemates because he is so good and combines tge speed with the work ethic par excellence. ITwoukd be fun to watch such s klne.

You woukd then hope Bennet can Help Bedatdxto ubderstand how to up his own 2 way work ethicand would open-faced to skit chances for Bedard.Akso Bedard needsza physical presence on his kine.

So for varying scenarios it seems to ne Bennet+Ellerslie makes more sense than alk eggs in 1 Marner basket and all large chunk of cap $$$ going to just1 player.
 
If we sign Marner to that much, you need a day 1 you can extend Bedard full years, well at least 6, agreement locked in

I would do 7 year 100 mill for marner and try to get 25% deferred to get the cap hit closer to 13.5. I think its going to cost a little more then that. But that is what I would offer day 1. you dont want to pay someone just to get them. IE they need to want to come. he was born near Toronto so Im sure he grew up a leafs fan. But when he 12-17 hawks were really good. still close to his home town. Boston, Pitt, NYR dont seem like options. I think we have a shot.

We won one playoff round after 2015 and the Kane, Towes, Seabrook contracts. I don't need to
mention Seth Jones.

Build from within... If it were...Matthews..that may sway me, but not M&M.
 
Marner turns 28 May 6th...Bennett is 28 ..and Ehlers is 29 ..So tgese gi yes lokong for bog contracts for 6 to 8 years.. Marner definitely 7 ...Other 2 maybe we get them on 6 year deals..?

Point is We do not want to sign anybody like g term where a season goes way past age 35.
