If he signs a 7 year deal, he will be 35 by the time that deal runs out.

He's a smooth skater who avoids contact, and doesn't really play a "heavy" game - the hockey IQ, and his ability to read the game away from the puck, will still be there at 35. Good chance that his skating will too, especially if he continues to be shifty and avoid getting hit.

Wouldn't rule out him making good money at 35+, to be honest. Especially if he goes somewhere where the core he's joining enables him to have more success than the anchors that all weighed each other down here.

He ain't getting anywhere close to $13.5M in eight years unless the cap rises an insane amount which is unlikely.

So whatever the difference he signs on for in year 8 will need to be made up. And if he doesn't even get the $13.5 the Leafs offered from someone now that money will also need to be made up somehow as well. Even if he gets $13x7 + $8x1 = $99M he's short $9M and that would have to be made up over the last five or so years of his career.

Nobody is gonna overpay him $2M a year for five years to make up the difference.

They offered Rantanen that contract, so the contract size is absolutely not a barrier for the Canes... I suspect they'll offer Marner the same one. Marner will get paid well, and for seven years by someone.

I thought Canes offered Ranta closer to $12.5m but I wish them luck if they sign Marner @ $13.5m. They need a scorer with size who can play heavy. They would then have to find that player because Marner is not it.

You might have a point if the booing wasn't half a decade late. Not sure the infatuation with just lying about reality is these days, but I'm not going to participate. We're not going to pretend that leaf games are loud in any way.

The regular season is a morgue and that's where all games vs Marner will be. Unless he signs with Tampa or Florida, then he'll get some boos for a couple of shifts in the playoffs until they beat the Leafs brains in then it's back to the library. Maybe we can get some 2 second long Marner Sucks chants going.
