My vote was to let him walk. But with that being said, how do they replace his scoring in the lineup? I don't think it is only him that has to be let go. I think Reilly needs to be forced out of town. Now with both of these things said, this is what I want to see:

Let Marner walk
Sign Tavares to team friendly deal ( 5-6 million per)

These two transactions save you around 16 million.

Then you force Reilly to waive his no trade. Provide 10 teams you would accept a trade to. Trade him with an eye to not replace him on D but bring in a couple of pieces for your forward core that will check a box on your bottom 6 and find someone for the top 6. This deal may need to be expanded (something like Reilly, Kampf and Robertson rights).

This transaction clears cap space, how much depends on what comes back in. But to start with you can ship out roughly $10.2 million in salary. You should easily be able to bring in 2 players at that cost if not less in trade. So lets say you bring in a 5 million dollar top 6 forward, and a 2 million dollar forward for bottom 6. Maybe the team we work with eats some salary. So lets say you save on the trade 2 million. This now gives us 18 million in cap space.

The last change to the roster before free agency should be the trading of Jarnkrok and his $2.1 million cap hit. This should be easy enough as his guaranteed money for the last year of his contract $875K as the rest is bonus. But his cap hit is still $2.1 million. Something a team like Utah, Seattle, Islanders, Buffalo, Chicago would be all over for a pick or two. This would bring us to 20 million in cap space with holes to fill in free agency and without the cap rising this off season. Add 7.5 million to that and your at almost $28 million to spend in free agency.

Now work with me:

Needs are a C, replacement D for Reilly, more scoring, size/speed/heart and grit all being pre-requisites

They should be all over Bennett. Bring him home. After winning his second cup in 2 years in Florida. Its time for him to leave and cash out. Sign him to $7 million X 6 years contract. He's 28 and will be good until hes 34/35. This leaves you $20 million to spend.

Sign Ekblad for $8.5 million per season times 4 years. Its more expensive then Reilly but he is a better Dman then Reilly and plays more physical like Tre and Chief like. This leaves you 11.5 to spend.

Sign Brandon Tanev to close out his career in Toronto playing at home and with his brother. $2 million a season times 2. Leaves you $9.5 million left

Re-sign Lorentz. $1.3 million times 2 years. Leaves you around 8 million.

Re-sign Holmberg. Depth piece who can move in up and down lineup. $1 million for the year. Leaves 7 million.

I spend no more based on this scenario as some of these contracts may need to rise a bit. But leave space to do so. Here's my lineup:

Knies-Matthews-Domi
Forward acquired in Reilly deal - Bennett - Nylander
McMann - Tavares - Forward acquired in Reilly deal
Lorentz - Laughton - Tanev
Holmberg

OEL - Ekblad
McCabe - Tanev
Benoit - Carlo
Myers
Oh Reilly won't get you much unless you eat some of that contract. Other teams see him as a possible 3d who needs sheltered minutes. He might fetch you a second rounder. He looks cooked.

Walk. I have a hunch with a wife and kid he probably wants to stay but his ego won't let him take a home town discount. Appreciate what you did Mitch. Buh bye.
Having a child might be the primary reason he’d want to leave for a better market. Granted he has 5 yrs before his son is in school but it would be nice to have him grow up in the environment. If I was in his shoes I’d be looking at Tampa, Nashville, Carolina, or Utah.

Toxic attitude, he thinks he is better than he actually is.

I'm actually quite modest myself.

I'm way greater than I tell everyone I am. Such humility didn't come naturally though. When I was younger I used to be conceited.

But now I'm perfect.

That's Marner in a nutshell. A supreme entity on skates. The quintessential hockey player.

God broke the mold when he made this guy.

Just because Marner hasn't won anything doesn't mean he's not the greatest player to ever lace 'em up. Winning is just a natural byproduct of personal performance. Given Marner's individual accolades he's practically a champ already.

In his mind he's already won the cup.

He does not need the cup he wants $
Like matthews and nylander and tavares

Both Sign & Trade

Both Sam Bennett and Mitch Marner are Darren Ferris clients.

Mitch mentioned Florida and Vegas as 2 choices he would consider and Sam Bennett claimed if he is not returning to Florida then he wants to play for Toronto.

So after Sam Bennett finishes his Cup run.

Leafs sign Marner 8 years @ $12 mil and Florida signs Bennett to 8 years at $8 mil and then have those players sway teams for each other.

Outsider.
I think it’s a case of the core not having to be accountable to ownership but…..
The fans are rightfully pissed at having arguably one of the top cores in the league and not being able to push through.
The core 4 individually are immensely talented but it’s just not working.
I think Matthews/Nylander are key pieces to keep.
Tavares IF the price is right.
Both the Leafs and Marner benefit from moving on.
FA will be interesting to see what the Lesfs will do.

If Florida wins the cup in 6 games or fewer, what is everyones opinion on Marner then ?

I'm genuinely torn. We're the only team so far that put up a fight and actually had Florida on their heels so far in the playoffs. If they steamroll through Edmonton, I'm genuinely not sure how I'll feel about this team.

As of right now I am 10000% prepared to move on without Marner, but imagine they destroy Edmonton. Does that change how we evaluate this post-season ?

I mean game 5/7 were still inexcusable disasters, but even with those 2 horrible games it went 7.

I really hope the Oilers win, because I think it's going to be difficult for us fans and management to gauge what the right move is going forward if Florida wins, especially if it's in convincing fashion.
Edmonton is winning it my friend

Those numbers make a lot more sense than the silly poll about Marner at 10.9 or Bennett at 10.

Would Ferris let either sign for that low?

FLA looks like TB did when they got to their 3rd cup in a row if you ask me....tired and running out of steam. I think EDM takes this in 6 or less. They have skill galore AND they are pretty nasty....FLA hasn't had to deal with that so far this year with any of the teams they beat. Going to be a rude awakening for their smarmy Coach of the Century Paul Maurice. I want to hear his lecture after they lose this series...gonna be fun.

F off with the sign and trade.

if he's gone, just accept it's a clean break and we're not getting assets back

I'm rdy for it
I'll glady take the $13.5m they offered him in cap along with the money we save from Tavares' haircut and sign/acquire 2-3 players that are willing to play outside their comfort zones in the playoffs.

I'll bet Marner and Bennett sign on the same team, and then McDavid joins them a year later. And if that happens and it's not here, I hope the fans are proud of what they've done, because that could have been US.

You think the fans are responsible for Marner leaving? The Leafs offered him $13.5m and he refused to negotiate. Sorry, he did this to himself with his last 6 poor playoff performances/no shows (8 playoff goals in the last 6 years all for almost $66m). Said he punched his ticket out of town after he bent over Dubas. A shame it took 6 years thanks to Shanny and Co.

Blaming the fans for literally any part of how this team is constructed is peak stupidity that shouldn't even be acknowledged.

Omg we're back to blaming the fans again
Don't you remember Treliving last recent press conference?

Treliving said and I'm paraphrasing here. :sarcasm:

"The loyal fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs have spoken and have identified Mitch Marner as the weakest link. He is soft, plays small, and is easily intimidated by physical play and disappears and crumbles under pressure in important playoff games. The "Royal We" are tired of the same old results year after painful year, and doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results is the definition of insanity. Therefore in the best interest of Leafs overall objective to increase the opportunity to win a championship we collectively to the very last man woman and child of Leaf Nation suggest we move on from this core 4, and change the DNA and live happily ever after".

Treliving perhaps chose to shorten that above (which was implied) to a more concise. :wg:

Leafs GM Brad Treliving Publicly Address the Mitch Marner Situation During Media Session

In the biggest signal yet that the Toronto Maple Leafs have no interest in running it back once again, GM Brad Treliving has told reporters big changes are coming over the summer.

In a year-end news conference, Treliving said getting the same result year over year is no longer and option, and it's time to shake things up.

"There's some DNA that has to change in our team. If you keep getting to the same result, there's some DNA that needs to change. That's on me going forward. We've now started the planning, and it's early, for putting a team together for 2025-26."
