You absolutely let him walk. No need to bring him back. Perfect example of what Marner has been and always will be. A baby and someone that wants to make it about himself. He could have simply avoided all of this accepting the contract offered and become the home town kid that played out his career for the Leafs. He decided to make this off season all about himself, and wants the Leafs to come begging. No frickin way, its an honor to don the jersey not the other way around. Good riddance.

I don't think he wants the Leafs to beg. If that was the case, he'd at least have entered negotiations throughout the year.

I said all year that I think he just wants the Leafs to go away so he can pursue a career somewhere where he's happier and more respected. For some reason, I kept getting a ton of pushback when I stated that. It always seemed crystal clear to me that he had no intention of coming back to Toronto. I'm slightly amused and confused as to why it took so many so long to come to the most obvious realization, months ago.

He's gone.

New kid, new-ish wife, new opportunities to get out of Toronto and start a life somewhere where no one gives a shit about him.

He's 100% running out the door July 1.

Don't let the door hit him out the way out. Time for some new blood.

How many 100 point players did the Panthers have ? Zero. But what they do have is a skilled, tougher, deeper lineup that wins when it matters.

This notion that you need 100 point player(s) to win a championship is too simplistic. What you need is a TEAM that plays hard, with courage and knows how to win. That’s the team that Treliving needs to build starting with the cap space he’ll save by not paying Marner the money he wants.

I think Marner is a great player... wouldn't even surprise me if he roasts us when he plays against but it's time for the team to do something different.

Our goaltending and d is much better now.

Time to round out the forward group. Not just UFAs either. It's going to take some creativity. I Hope they can figure it out. Biggest summer to be able to really change the team in a long time.

In a perfect world, don't we try and re-sign him and even with a no trade trade him? If he signs 8 years and we fail again next year, we say, gtfo. He's not going to block a trade for 7 years of us not wanting him and we get assets back. Just a thought.

I really don't know if he's staying or going but Marner for 13 million, I don't want it. He's not a winner. He disappears in the big games and then yells at the team like he's done anything.

If Florida wins the cup in 6 games or fewer, what is everyones opinion on Marner then ?

I'm genuinely torn. We're the only team so far that put up a fight and actually had Florida on their heels so far in the playoffs. If they steamroll through Edmonton, I'm genuinely not sure how I'll feel about this team.

As of right now I am 10000% prepared to move on without Marner, but imagine they destroy Edmonton. Does that change how we evaluate this post-season ?

I mean game 5/7 were still inexcusable disasters, but even with those 2 horrible games it went 7.

I really hope the Oilers win, because I think it's going to be difficult for us fans and management to gauge what the right move is going forward if Florida wins, especially if it's in convincing fashion.

Rewatch games 5 and 7 and then tell me they had Florida on their heels. There is a reason Tre said this team needs to change it's DNA. Believe it.

After the CBJ embracement, Shanny said they lacked killer instinct. 5 years later they still do not have it. Don't be fooled.

I think the Leafs had a puncher's chance to beat Florida. They are the Deontay Wilder of hockey.

They stunned the Panthers in the first two games and had them on the backfoot. The Leafs would have closed the show had they won not blown a 3-1 lead in Game 3. Thing about having a puncher's chance is that if you don't go for the KO and connect, you will eventually lose against an elite opponent because you lack basic fundamentals - be it boxing or hockey. This 2024-2025 team had too many flaws, but most of all, it lacked the killer instinct to close the show.

I think if they got past Florida, you can't say that they would have beaten Carolina because the latter lost to the Panthers in 5. The Leafs would have similarly had a puncher's chance against the Hurricanes, just a higher probability of connecting and scoring the knockout. That doesn't necessarily mean that the Leafs are close to SC contention. Fortunately, Marner is 100% out the door, so there's no temptation available for management to run it back yet another time.

If we sign him for 13x8 and he craps the bed in the playoffs again, how much do you figure it would cost us to have someone take him and that contract off our hands?

Throw game 4 in there as well. The score may have been close, but they were absolutely dominated

It's funny reading people say things like "keep him on a short term deal" or "no more than $12m/yr" or "no NMC/NTC."

Guys, he's a UFA in 6 weeks who deeply resents the fan base, media, and possibly management. We have zero leverage and he wants to leave. He's a goner and at this point even $14mx8yrs wouldn't do it.

I don't blame him one bit and would do the same thing if I were in his position. Take your wife and baby and go start a new life somewhere else without all the baggage and pressure.
They all have a big year before payday and decline at 30. That contract will suck soon.

Kid has so much talent, but just doesn't have it when the going gets tough. Soft as baby shit. The 100 regular season points will be hard to replace, but he's all about maximizing money for him and nothing else. He wouldn't, or won't, take any sort of discount to stay here. They literally tried to trade him at the deadline (about a year too late, I'll add). He's gone.

Good riddance.
First off you assume he will get a 100 pts. They all have a big year before payday and he will decline at 30. That contract will suck at the back end. Even Mathews was only 4 years because at 32 he won't be worth $14 million.

No more core four. It has not worked in 9 years and it won't next year. Rosehill has him figured out, when things get physical and tough, he is not there. Look at him during the handshake line, he was the smallest one out there... scrawny.

Let someone else play him around 14 million eat up a large sum of the salary cap to put up great regular season numbers and then disappear in the post season.
I'd trade Marner for Ekblad if I could. He needs a new start. The damage is done. The build failed.
