As always, it depends on the cost. A one deal for 7 million, keep. A 9 million deal for any number of years without trade protection, keep. At any number that he's likely to agree to, don't walk, run!
The only way you keep him is to treat him as a PK/ PP specialist and pay him 5-7 million per season.

It's funny reading people say things like "keep him on a short term deal" or "no more than $12m/yr" or "no NMC/NTC."

Guys, he's a UFA in 6 weeks who deeply resents the fan base, media, and possibly management. We have zero leverage and he wants to leave. He's a goner and at this point even $14mx8yrs wouldn't do it.

I don't blame him one bit and would do the same thing if I were in his position. Take your wife and baby and go start a new life somewhere else without all the baggage and pressure.
What about his statement, playing for the Leafs “meant everything to me” sounds like he’d take no raise to stay,

Might be in the minority here but I'd keep him.

The problem is Marner & Matthews playing together. Get them off the same line in the playoffs. Their cute regular season BS doesn't work come playoff time.

13.5m was extremely fair too. By that I mean huge overpay
It's also consistent with what my belief around Marner all season - he fully intends to test free agency, because he's done in Toronto and can't handle the heat here.

I'm surprised at how much pushback there was against the idea that he already decided he was going to walk, when it seemed so obvious to me every time he talked about his time in Toronto and a contract.

Sounded like a goodbye - which is what he's sounded like every time he's talked about his future and an extension here, all year.

His mind was made up in the fall IMO, which is one of the factors which led to him looking so much more relaxed on the ice during the regular season and to start the playoffs - the criticism doesn't hit as hard when you know it's not your problem anymore.

So then playing here doesn’t really mean everything to him does it.

I believe him when he says that.

I also think he, and the people around him, have become so defensive and adversarial with fans, media, and the marketplace, that he/they have also concluded that it's best he just leaves and goes somewhere else.

Him being doxxed after game 7 is just unacceptable - if I had just had a new kid, and those private details were being leaked, I'd be on the first plane out of town with my family

If I want to be an armchair psychologist
- he told the press he feels depression
- he has all he ever wanted: dream career, one of the best players in the NHL, all the money he ever wanted, and yet he's not happy and is getting harassed by fans online and in person

That is incredibly upsetting that his life's work was achieved but it's very much not working out to happiness.

It must be a shock to the system that he could feel happier in a place like Anaheim.

I could be way off base, but it certainly looks like he's going to leave. Up to him though

If he came and asked for $500k less than what Rantanen got I'd have to listen and think hard. But we know he and his agent will try to set the bar for UFA wingers, he's not lived up to his current contract, nevermind the $14m some dumbass GM will throw at him.

Kid has so much talent, but just doesn't have it when the going gets tough. Soft as baby shit. The 100 regular season points will be hard to replace, but he's all about maximizing money for him and nothing else. He wouldn't, or won't, take any sort of discount to stay here. They literally tried to trade him at the deadline (about a year too late, I'll add). He's gone.

Good riddance.

I’d still give him 88 million for the next 8 years, it ain’t chicken feed. He gets to play for the team that means everything to him. Sounds like a match made in heaven both sides would be thrilled.

99% he is gone agreed. I would be stunned if he wants to come back and sign up for a life of negativity in this city. For his own sanity he should leave and he will.

This thread is a time capsule, it's going to be bumped so often in the future.

I recognize emotions are high.. Mitch is a fantastic player and there's a reason every team is salivating at the prospect of signing him. Given his comments, I don't think he wants to stay here anyways. That said, I would be happy to keep him at a reasonable contract. If he continues to insist being overpaid, we are better off replacing him **if** we do not replace him with equally overpaid but less talented/useful players.

Keep marner he is the straw that stirs the offense. Sign bigger players UFA Bennet to insulate him Bennet 7 yrs 8 mil per

Trade Mathews And his nonchalantness and I am being polite here. Greta goal scorer when not injured but thats it. When he was rag dolled by the habs in the bubble it messed him up. There been no response from that or anything else since
Trade for 2 first rnders and 2 prospects
13 mil cap freed up
Tavares sign 7 yrs 4.5 mil per if not move on
Clearing cap of 11.1 or 6.6 mil
Cap goes up as well.
Close to 30 mil in cap before we resign knies 7 mil 5 years

Sign marner 12.2 8 yrs

It is over for Marner in Toronto. He knew the way it would end here and it is why he was not willing to sign. Good riddance to a waste of cap space.
