I don't think you're asking yourself the right question...

Nylander alone will NEVER overcome any Matthews injury...
Did you miss this years playoffs? And also last years when Matty was out?

Nylander was Matty, what we need is both of them.

i would sooner see the last of Matthews i don't ever want to see him in a leaf's jersey ever again matt would be nothing if it wasn't for Marner making the perfect pass to him matt missed the net more times then he missed Bieber when matthews was out of the lineup they were winners last year when he was out of the playoffs they were winners then someone with all there hockey sense decided to put a sick player back on the ice and they were losers again with matthews in the lineup the team makes me sick yes sick because when the lost again i threw up my guts

This year playoff... I saw a guy who showing up less than 30 % of the time and who help to raising Florida momemtum everytime he had been on the ice since game 3 by avoiding every hit he could and turning the puck over and over again to don't get hit, who's stop playing in the defensive over and over again waiting for the easy breakaway of scoring chance off the rush

No that's not the kind of leader you need in playoff

You will NEVER WIN ANYTHING with player (who one of you top player) who's not even able to work and who was just avoiding hit over and over again on every shift even in a f***ing overtime in playoff when the game is on the line

When you need to put player like Holmberg even if Pacioretty was much better just to babysit Nylander in the defensive end because you know he's gonna cheat on every shift, sorry it's not how you create a winning culture

He wqs amaizing game 1-2 and by a miles best player on both team but ...honestly gm 3 to 7, he was worst player on the ice

You were talking about replacing Matty, not replacing Messier.

That's what Willy did. This playoffs, and when Matty was out last playoffs.

Your last line isn't serious and it's hard to tell what is and isnt supposed to be. Game 5 for example, we lost but he was the best player on the ice. The commentators remarked on that several times. We lost because it was Panthers vs Willy alone.

Game 5 ... a game where everybody had been trash and who was maybe worst game of the season or one of worst game ...It is really your exemple...honestly...

Just watch again last 5 game and count the number of time... He was just surfing in defensive end waiting for a teammate doing the job, just throw the puck away to avoid a contact...

Just sending you the way he defending most part of time until gm 3( ps i know its a 2023 video, but he was playing the same exact way)

He's a tremendous offensive player but honestly hes a poison for a team Culture. You just CAN'T hope winning anything by playing hard 33% of time even if that's 33 % are fabulous and got pretty awesome stats... It's still pretty awful

He is serious, but he seems to have a huge bias against Nylander - how else can you make those ridiculous statements?

What does any of this have to do with your claim that an injured Matty - the no leadership goal scorer - is better replaced by Mitch than Willy, who over the last two playoffs, has exactly replaced Matty, with our goal scoring?

To the tune of making that the substance behind a trade proposition...

What offers, I’ve read he didn’t want to negotiate during the season
I suppose if you take ‘don’t negotiate during the season’ as being completely inflexible and literal, but I think it is generally accepted that there was a 13 million + offer on the table from the Leafs. He must have been aware of that but decided he’d rather be a UFA. To me that’s turning them down, even if you claim not to be formally negotiating.

Different sport but Vladdy’s deadline for negotiation had passed too, remember?

What kind of impact do you think a guy like this

can have to the rest of the team? Do you really think than any player in that team will follow a guy who's cheating all game long...

Im as anti marner as anyone, more so with him as a person. With that said, I’d offer him 12.5x8 and tell him your not making more then MacKinnon. I then offer Bennett 8.5x7. I would trade Nylander and M.Reilly. This way you keep an asset in Mitch who seemed to have chemistry with Bennett at the 4 Nations, get assets for Nylander and free up cap space from Reilly’s contract to explore Free agency.

It pains me to say it truly.

But the answer is walk.

He has to move on from here, and, we absolutely have to use that 12 million in cap space correctly or else it was a mistake. Don't mess it up Tre.

Keep.

Some big changes are required here, no doubt. I want to see something drastic happen because what we've had all this time is just not working.

But Marner is the team's most talented player, a hometown boy no less, and replacing 100-point players is damn near impossible.

I'd much rather use Tavares's money opening up to fill out some gaps than seeing Marner walk away for nothing. The idea of Marner out of this lineup leaves a massive hole. A hole that signing the likes of Ehlers and Bennett and whoever else won't necessarily fill.

It's funny reading people say things like "keep him on a short term deal" or "no more than $12m/yr" or "no NMC/NTC."

Guys, he's a UFA in 6 weeks who deeply resents the fan base, media, and possibly management. We have zero leverage and he wants to leave. He's a goner and at this point even $14mx8yrs wouldn't do it.

I don't blame him one bit and would do the same thing if I were in his position. Take your wife and baby and go start a new life somewhere else without all the baggage and pressure.

It is a tough one ... obviously, at a discount you have to sign him, but why would he take a discount?

It would be hard to justify keeping the team together, when there isn't any Cap Space to bring in players who can carry the team to the next level.

As much as many are piling on Nylander and marner ... wtf Matthews?
Here’s the question for all:

Say we let Tavares/Marner walk. Do you think Matthews/Nylander have what it takes to lead the team through a new mentality, playoff grind, adversity, and accepted way of playing in tough moments?

If yes, carry on.
If the answer is no, what are we doing with any of them.

The only contract I would accept is a 1 year contract with no trade protection. Even for 10.93M. If Marner had offered this and then asked for a trade, he could save some of his legacy.

Even if we would get fleeced in a trade, I'd rather have a 2nd rounder than nothing.

He'll go somewhere else and become a playoff stud and Cup champion. I have zero doubt. Because that's just how it goes for us. But it ain't happening here.
Stop repeating this is “aaaw the pressure is too high in Torontoooo” - it’s not! If it is for some, they shouldn’t be pro athletes. Geeeez….imagine Real Madrid or Man United (example) players - they’re under pressure, and if they don’t deliver, they’re sent away to another league or team. Or, if you’re team is facing degradation in the SHL or Premier League, missing out on millions and playing in the highest league - then you can talk about pressure.

How can Leafs players be expected to deliver when they’re playing for a team that hasn’t won in 60 years? You gotta stop with this narrative. They’re just not good enough, and Marner’s not going to become a playoff warrior by leaving
