Speculation: Marner blocked a trade to Carolina for Rantanen

  • Xenforo Cloud is doing server maintenance Thurdsay 13th at 9 AM GMT. Downtime is to be expected during the process. Server changes were implemented recently to cope with the traffic surge last week. This seems to be affecting the user login, so please anyone experiencing this, log out and clear the browser cache. We expect to have this issue solved once the maintenance is complete.

...that's not splitting hairs, that's facts, plain and simple...if someone has never hit 100 points in a Season, referring to them as a "100-point Player" is incorrect... :thumbu:
No. Players and their contributions are way beyond finite numbers. You're just talking in the context of hockey pools or something. Jonathan Huberdeau gets to call himself a "115-point player" now?

...facts are facts...a player that has never hit 100 points in a Season should not be called a 100-point player...if that fact eludes you, oh well...

He'll want Rantanen tax-equivalent money.
He is going to get it most likely. If he makes it to FA, I am 100% sure Seattle will throw between $12-$13M AAV at him. I doubt he wants to sign here but Seattle needs a game changing player and Marner is certainly that.

Other than Seattle we have the two Florida teams and also Vegas. I can see all of those teams also make roster moves to see if they can accomodate him. If he re-signs in Toronto, it would very likely not be for the most $.

marner refused to extend with leafs
marner refused trade after refusing to extend
marner knows the leafs don't want him
leafs can't pretend they want to keep him
locker room knows he is selfish and sabotaged the team

just seems uncomfortable all around, even without hyperbole

I assume everyone with cap space will talk to him.
There's teams like Calgary that clearly won't be on his list but who have the cap space. In tax equivalent Calgary would have to offer 13.2M just to be at par with Rantanen; a team like Anaheim would be closer to 13.5M for the equivalent pay.

Wouldn't surprise me if the Canes throw everything at him to see if it sticks.

as a NYI fan, I hope they're in on it. A deal here and there, and imo they can make the money work, especially if they deal Dobson, who would have less value in that scenario b/c his role on the PP would decrease.

This is not at all based in reality.

The Leafs have wanted to extend Marner. For better or worse, they want to keep him. When he refused to even negotiate, the prospect of having a signed Rantanen and that security made sense. Preferring a locked up Rantanen over a rental Marner does not at all mean they don’t want Marner.

Oh man he better re-sign with them now lol. Imagine he rejects a trade for an awesome player wanting to sign a long-term deal with them just to walk on July 1. That would be the ultimate FU

I mean he’s scored 90+ like 3 times including 99. He’s def a top point getter in this league

He scored 99 points 2 seasons ago in 80 games.

He played at 100+ point pace in every season the last 5 years.

Splitting hairs much?

...nope, just pointing out AGAIN that calling him a 100-point player is false since he's never done it in a Season...dunno why that's soo hard to understand...reminiscent of the old arguement about Kessel being a 40-goal guy, despite the fact he never scored 40 in a Season...at least y'all are consistent... :biglaugh:

Whatever u say man you’re clearly above all in intelligence

1st now after TDL what we need to know are :
Does he want to stay with Leafs ?
If no where he want ? Cash or Winning
If it's cash San jose - Chicago or columbus can be a destinaiton
If he want to win Colorado is a good choice but not more than 11.5 M per year

Treliving: “Hey Mitch. Canes wanna trade for ya. Worth discussing or no? Aight, I’ll tell ‘em to kick rocks. You’re playing great buddy, keep it up and we’ll figure this whole contract thing out in the offseason. Yep, talk to you later… *click*. f***in prick.”

Marner has had phenomenal regular sason success.

That said, he along with Matthews has never had any sustained playoff success for more than a game or two at a time. 50 in 57 games, 11g 39a. A few of these points were also in blowout playoff games where it was padding an already large lead.

I'm done shitting on the guy, but everyone talking about him being a game-breaker and getting a 14M contract...buyer beware. He hasn't thrived in the post season when he starts getting bodied and he has less time and space. I don't see this changing. It's another year of short memories with him racking up 82-game points.
