The Leafs don't consider winning one round in the playoffs a successful year. It is better than not winning a round though.
As a pending free agent, he might get that choice.

Domi obviously can’t replace everything Marner does. But it is a fact that Matthews had his most productive stretch last season, while scoring 69 goals, with Domi as his RW and not Marner.
It’s a pretty commonly held sentiment that Marner with Matthews is a waste as they can both drive a line.
There is no justification for the way the Leafs have dragged Marner through the mud. Matthews and Nylanders should be deeper in that mud than Marner gets they get their ridiculous contracts and Marner takes the blame. Matthews earns with in a few hundred $K of McDavid and Nylander gets paid like his 3/4 of his contract year was really him but that fell apart the second his pen hit that bloated contract.

Marner hasn't been dragged through the mud. He can sign a contract with Toronto or choose free agencyand sign where he likes.

He 100% has been dragged by the Leafs. It’s what they do. They take one guy and blame him for everything on the way out. Yet nothing ever changes. It’s been Babcock’s fault, Anderssen’s fault, Kadri’s fault, Keefe’s fault, Dubas’ fault etc. But somehow nothing changes. The leadership of Matthews and Nylander has lead them to a place where just winning a round was their Stanley Cup. In the one istance they did win that round it was all they wanted and then just went home. Matthews and Nylander get to write their own contracts dispite being worse in the playoffs than Marner who at least gets involved enough in the play to take blame. Meanwhile Matthews skates around with an invisible force field that keeps him 10 feet away from any contact whatsoever.

Would you? If you played for the team you loved growing up and the fans shat on you constantly your entire career? And critiqued you for things your team mates did too (Nylander sitting out, Matthews choking in playoffs, Tavares going for max UFA dollars)? All while being the leading scorer five out of nine seasons and never being lower than third? And several of the times he was 2nd/3rd he actually outpaced or equaled Matthews' points per game.
While Nylander has clearly been the best Leaf in most playoffs, Marner at least had a few standout playoffs to go with his poor performances, while Matthews is just consistently not the difference maker but not invisible in any given year. Marner more flips from great to shit.
Not only that but you guys shit talk his dad too. I'm sure that makes him want to stay. If the caveat is the Leafs need him to compete for a cup, then why would he not go to another roster willing to pay him that might have a better roster than the Leafs sans Marner?
At least that's how the NBA works. If he gets traded to that team though they lose that depth of talent and it's hard to recover. I don't see how Leafs fans can complain about that either since that's what Tavares did to the Islanders to ensure he was walking to the best Leafs team possible. Granted the Isles rallied around it and have been way more successful than the Leafs. Maybe the Leafs will do the same? I'm sure you can do something with a 13-14 mil opening + whatever discount Tavares stays for (is he staying?).
Just take a look at the free agent class, I'm sure another 100 point guy still in their prime will be available. Well maybe not but there's Duchene, Ehlers and Tavares rounding out the top 4. Oh one is already there. Ok so maybe it will be tough without any futures to trade for a replacement forward. But you can get a top 2 RD like Ekblad (nevermind), Pionk (maybe), or Fabbro (lol). Yeah, I don't know, it's tough to navigate. I guess overpay Adin Hill to get a real #1 goalie (who has never even played 40 games in a season but is good in the playoffs)?
Probably you guys will toss a ton at Sam Bennett if he walks and you guys lose Marner. But as the only real center available I'm sure it's a bidding war between all the teams without second line centers (or in some case first) but no owner commitment to full tear downs like Boston (basically traded everyone for re-tooling assets instead of true rebuild), Vancouver, St. Louis, etc. Not to mention Florida aren't even tight on cap space, don't have other key players to re-sign except PEDblad (which I'm sure Jones was a precursor to letting him walk), possibly Marchand, and Bob is coming off the books next summer with another massive cap rise.
I am enjoying this at least as a Habs fan. Hope you guys don't fall off a cliff like Boston though, I want to see some playoff Habs vs Leafs. I am very much enjoying seeing Boston and Toronto struggle with players though. Canes getting dumped on in the middle of all of this while Kotkaniemi did not in fact turn into a 2C is even better.
Anyways, good for Marner to do what's best for him. Like Pacioretty, these guys deserve to throw shade back and do what they want after dealing with our media and fans. Granted, we got a #1C who's better than Patches in his prime by trading him (and honestly, Tatar was better than Patches for us since Patches got injured every year with Vegas). Hope you guys get to the second round (conditionally: if you're facing Florida, who's pick may be potentially ours in case Calgary bottoms out or has playoff success).
Marner is great. Hope he signs with the Habs.

I can see other desperate teams with the cap space offering him 16-17 mil. Contenders may have to move some pieces or maybe a rebuilding team has room but I can't imagine him signing anything less than 15 mil with the rising cap.
His communication tells me he's walking right into free agency. I don't blame the Leafs, their choices are pretty limited. I guess just pray Marner blows up in the post-season finally.

As indicated by action or inaction from the Marner camp, absolutely. And the inference is equally plain whether Treliving's inclination to ask Marner's camp or Marner's camp disinclination to negotiate in good faith before the playoffs to offers in excess of his worth according to production.
The conversation may have gone something like this:
Treliving: Hi, Darren: Carolina called and asked if Mitch would waive to play there. So in doing our due diligence, we are asking that question, without expectation that you guys want to play there.
Ferris: We're not waiving, Brad.
Treliving: Roger that. Thanks, Darren.
And that would have been it and all of it forecasted by Ferris to Marner, both of whom would have been in constant reception of the multiple offers provided by Treliving. It stands to reason on any number of fronts whether as an observable opportunity by a GM from another club or by Treliving himself; Marner's camp is rejecting offers from the club and our window of controlling what we can do by way of offers is closing rapidly and we're going to look after our best interests given the messaging from Marner's camp:
- My agent is handling all contract negotiations.
- We aren't interested in engaging in negotiations until after the season is done.
- He will stay with Toronto provided he's the highest paid player on the team.
- He will sign with another club for the amount (or more if bidding is robust) and term he would stay with Toronto for in the event it isn't offered.
One member on here wrote that the media has dragged Marner through the mud. Absolutely incorrect: They simply found him there and reported on location. There is no reason other than an inflated sense of self-worth for Marner, a hometown kid with a once in a generation hockey career (amateur to pro), with endorsement deals producing nigh-generational wealth, not to sign a deal that brings him within a few hundred thousand dollars of a twice 60 goal scorer.
Others have said, Treliving has a tendency to walk out stars. Again, absolutely incorrect. Treliving has found himself in difficult situations, some might even define his operational standard as crisis management. The finer point is, Treliving was lambasted for signing Nylander and Matthews to the amounts they were signed. He's speculatively lambasted for giving Marner anywhere close to $13M per season x 8, but apparently has done that, and still can't be seen to be largely defended by our base.
But he should be, because he has absolutely operated in good faith.

I doubt he wants 6 years. I am guessing 3-4 years max, then sign another huge 8 year deal once the cap had gone up a lot.
Brindamour would absolutely love him! Drives offense and doesn’t skimp on the defensive side. Plays top pp and pk, makes teammates better. Any coach in the world would love him.

That’s a little disengenous. He is easily a 100 point player. Last five years he scores at 104 point per 82 games played.

No, but you're splitting hairs. If you have an opportunity to sign a player like Marner, you do it. Why would any GM take issue with calling Marner a "100 point player"? Unless you're arguing over performance bonuses, the player who scores 99 points is similar to the player that scores 100....so he's a 100 point player who's never scored 100 points in a Season...that's Leaf math for ya...
