The way I see it The Leafs screwed themselves at least twice concerning Marner. When Dubas said anything was on the table and they fired him that was a mistake. Not the firing Dubas part but being unwilling to make a change to the big 4. Then they sat on their hands while his full no move kicked in. JT is re-upping for 7 or 8M we have been hearing.. and yes Mitch has been arguably our best regular season player, but not the playoffs when it really matters. Willy has been our playoff stud and actually shows up in the second season.

Problem is even Kane/Toews Crosby/Malkin didn't win cups when their cap % were near max.

Marner/Matthews refusal to sign long term 8 year contracts prettt much guarantees the Leafs will never get a lower cap% on them. Which pretty much guarantees them never to win the cup.

Other teams have better players at lower cap hits. Leafs are expected to beat these teams.

They won't, though. The only way they'd do it is if they get an elite player in return, which is what was happening here

Marner went 18 consecutive playoff games without a goal. He also went around 100 consecutive games without a playoff goal...while playing on a line with Matthews, Nylander and Tavares! How is that possible? Any other 10million plus players with these achievements?.

Interesting theory. Of course its nonsense but good effort. Matthews is having a down season in goal scoring with only 23. Using your theory Marner should have less points than usual cause he isn't poaching off of Matthews yet there he is in 6th in the NHL.

Also Career PPG in the playoffs. Marner leads the big 4.

Marner has barely been better than Matthews this year despite Matthews alleged injuries.

Marner has 79 pts in 62 games or a 104 pt pace per 82

Matthews has 56 pts in 48 games or 96 pts per 82

8 pt gap over the course of a 82 game season.

Marner at 12-13M wont lead us anywhere but continued playoff losses.

Leafs have chosen 34 and 88 as the 10M+ players.

There should not be any more 10M+ players on the team.

Use the JT and Marner 22M to get players to compliment the two guys who are kept

Look to pull a Seth Jones deal for Rielly and sign Chychuran in the summer.

Marner has no room left as a leaf. If was him or Nylander and they chose nylander. The leafs core has shown they cant win allocating 45-50% of the cap to the big 4. They can't make the same mistake again

Matthews is a 95 pts per 82 players in the reg season while marner is at 92 per 82 over their careers to date.

And both are 72 pts per 82 players in the playoffs.

The driving reason for playoff failures have been 34 and 16 dropping so heavily from Reg season

You can't keep on going with this core and team building philosphy and expect to win.

Leafs need to pivot. Sucks Marner was gifted a NMC on his 2nd deal by that idiot Dubas but we have to just move on from Marner if we want to have a chance to build a winner

How do you lose to Columbus in the playin and Montreal blowing a 3-1 lead after the numerous 1st rd losses to boston and Washington and go, “yup, let’s keep trying the same OL thing”. Incompetence!

How has that worked out in the last 8 years ? A significant portion of Tavares money is going to Knies plus roster spot left behind by Tavares so can’t really reallocate. This is without taking into account Woll’s salary increase to $3.6m as well as salary additions of Carlo & Laughton.

Except you've contradicted yourself. Rantanen, who you said is living off Mackinnon had more points than Mackinnon their cup year. Does that mean Rantanen was better than Mackinnon?

Willy being the Leafs "playoff stud" is a lot like being the smartest kid on the short bus

He signed an 8 year contract last year, maybe you missed it. It was more expensive than the one Pastrnak signed after scoring 61 goals, and 113 points. He has never signed a contract for less than Pastrnak, maybe the Bruins should do a trade 1 for 1 so he can play in front of real fans instead of the meanie pants poopy heads in Toronto.

Also the sun is bad for migraines, he should just stay home and have a watch party with friends while filming a documentary instead.
