That seems even weirder? Why would Toronto tell Marner that another team wants to trade for him if they’re not interested? I’m sure plenty of teams have approached Toronto about Marner, he doesn’t need to know about them.

Simple. Because they aren’t getting any where with the contract.

“Listen. We want to keep you. We have offered you a bunch of fair offers and you said no. If you really don’t want to be here, we have an offer from Carolina. Do you want to sign there. We will get a player back instead of losing you for nothing”.

That’s reasonable

Yea... awesome team guy and "leader'. Other players talk about want to leave money on the table to win. Meanwhile Marner, for the 2nd time, is doing every single thing he can to try and get overpaid. He's already been significantly overpaid and didn't live up to that contract.
Over the last 5 years Marner has more points than:

Nikita Kucherov, Auston Matthews, Sidney Crosby, and Matt Tkachuk and then 99% of nhlers too. He’s 7th out of ~2,100 total players over the 5 years. He's in the 1% of the 1%.

If your opinion is that he is overpaid or didn’t live up to his deal….my opinion about that would be it’s time to recalibrate expectations.

He’s worth whatever a team can afford in terms of cap structure. The cap will prevent him from being overpaid. Nobody else gets him on their team when he’s on yours. That’s what you’re paying for too. If you don’t want to spend what he costs; you can always downgrade and settle for less, 31 teams will be doing this, many against their will.

Marner has been shutting down contract discussions all year, exploring the market is natural given the situation and if this annoys Marner it's on him

Toronto basically said we want you, if you don't want to be here we have an option for you (Carolina)
He said no thanks to the option and said he wants to stay
He wants to stay thru the end of the year you mean

If he leaves ironically it will be the biggest NHL heel turn since JT!

Last year, Matthews paced significantly more goals and points with Max Domi on his line in Marners place. Domi was producing like crazy with Matthews.

Marner is good... but he relies heavily on Matthews. There is a reason over the past 3 years Matthews won the Ted Lindsay once and was also top 3 last year...and chosen in top 3 over Mcdavid.

I’ll suggest:

St. Louis will send Kyrou to Toronto pre draft and sign Marner.

Kyrou is actually pretty good and best of all, cost controlled. He’s nowhere near Marners level but you also don’t have to pay him like he is.

Meanwhile, Missouri is passing legislation that will change its income taxes.

I’m a whiner about the salary cap and the tax situation and I’ll still be one even if my team is a beneficiary. I’ll also do that while wearing a Marner jersey.

That’s not the way the situation was framed in the post I was responding to, sounds more like what Friedman is reporting (and yes this is a reasonable play).
