Yea... awesome team guy and "leader'. Other players talk about want to leave money on the table to win. Meanwhile Marner, for the 2nd time, is doing every single thing he can to try and get overpaid. He's already been significantly overpaid and didn't live up to that contract.
It will be a big culture shift when this silver spoon attitude is gone from the locker room.

Maybe.

It’s not as bad as it’s made out to be from the other article I read

Apparently the leafs said that Carolina is asking to trade for you and wants to sign you but our intention is to sign you and keep you here.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that.
"hey mitch, we want to sign you but carolina asked about you, that's soo crazy right? like you wouldn't waive to go there right? no? ok, well that's good because we had to intention of trading you there just wanted to know if you would waive"

But if Marners camp declined the leafs most recent offer I mean I can’t blame Brad for trying

I'm hearing conflicting reports. One is that they offered 2x 1st Cowan and Minten. This is saying it was likely just Marner straight up?
there were multiple rounds of negotiations

Round 1: Carolina asks for Marner, Toronto asks Marner if he wants to waive. He said no so that's not an option

Round 2: Carolina asks for Knies+++. Toronto doesn't want to do that since if they lose Marner in the summer, this means they lost Knies + Marner to sign Rantanen

Round 3: Toronto offers Cowan, Minten, 2x 1sts. Carolina takes Stankoven

they wouldn’t have asked him to waive if they had no interest in trading him

His team just tried to made an attempt to trade him. They didn't say no when Carolina asked, and it went to Marner to shut it down. That tells me the Leafs saw more chance in Rantanen, and probably more value. I don't think players take this lightly.
Marner has been shutting down contract discussions all year, exploring the market is natural given the situation and if this annoys Marner it's on him

Toronto basically said we want you, if you don't want to be here we have an option for you (Carolina). He said no thanks to the option and said he wants to stay

Sure, but players are also human. They told him that they had an offer-a team wanted him, so they brought it to him. It is definitely possible that it would sour the relationship between Marner and the team. It is also possible that it didn't. You don't think players take it lightly while I think different players have different mentalities.

There's been leaks in the TO media for months about Marner being "more than willing" to test the market. You cant be tough guy during negotiations then play the relationship card.

There has been speculation. It might be true.

I wonder if this means they're headed for a divorce, or Marner would prefer to stay.

Will be interesting to see.

As a hab fan I'd be fine with the habs throwing 14 mill at him, but he might be it's Toronto, or a quiet market.
