Value of: Marner as a UFA

He gave it a chance for 6 whole games. You struggle with grasping that this is not really a chance lmao.

He wasn't a good fit for the style of play Carolina wanted to play (which Rantanen said as much after the trade). Couldn't see himself playing that style for 8 years, so he told Carolina as much. Which is fair enough. Doesn't take long to realize when a fit isn't right.

But I'm done here. Clearly, you know better than everyone involved and they're all wrong. Only your viewpoint is correct. You should definitely be using your infallible declarations for something more than arguments on a hockey board. The world needs your powers!

You can only say so many times that it's very clear he didn't want to be there.

No. I'm posting information that makes you, as a Carolina fan, uncomfortable.

Because it'd really hurt to find out that not one, but two stars you went after, have no interest in playing for your team. :dunno:
I'm honestly OK with it. Of course like anyone one else, I would like them on my team but I also don't like the idea of paying either of those guys the contracts that they have gotten or are likely to get.

I'm not uncomfortable with anything here.

I could see the Flyers spending 13M x 7 or something along those lines. They have a lot of cap with no real notable players needing new contracts.

Same thing with the Capitals.

Rantanen says otherwise and takes offense to the thought that he never wanted to be there:

"Obviously, it was a big shock to leave Colorado, but I went [to Carolina] with an open mind and tried my best on the ice. When I put the jersey on there, I tried my best and just decided just a little bit before the Deadline that Carolina would probably get a better return for me if I would do a sign and trade; that it would be better for their team rather than me being a rental and going somewhere to play. So that was the decision.

I want to make it clear that I was open-minded in Carolina and really thought about staying there."

But I'm sure you know better than the player, his agent, and literally everyone involved in the deal how it actually went down
That's probably the same answer most players would give to the media regardless of their true feelings.

112 mil over 7 years to the Ducks for 16 mil per year.
Half his salary is deferred for after year 10 (same thing they did with Vatrano) to bring his AAV down to 12.5.

I can dream atleast.

I'm not. I'm just not looking at the situation with blinders on like you are. :thumbu:

Tell me more about how excited Rantanen was to have a long career in Carolina and changed his mind in 6 games, and then reportedly took less money to get out.

Screams that he never wanted to be there. You just don't want to hear it. Kinda like you don't want to hear that Marner declining to waive his NMC most likely just means he doesn't want to be in Carolina.
Honestly him not waving most likely means he wants at least one more kick at the can with the only team he's ever played for that is also his hometown team. And that this gives him the option of an 8 year contract with the only team he's ever played for that is also his hometown team. Oh and also because he doesn't want to move away when he's about to have a baby and doesn't have to move.

But to placate you, yes it could also means he just doesn't want to be in Carolina.

I guess we'll find out if he hits free agency and they offer him to best deal.

Marner and a new coach... Man this team would be fun to watch

Weirdly, every reason you just gave can also read as, "He doesn't want to be in Carolina."

Well, if the entire point of your continued argument is that he didn't want to be in Carolina at the exact moment in time that they asked him to waive his NMC than you are correct, he clearly did not want to be in Carolina at that moment in time.

If you're argument is that he will never want to be in Carolina than you're just speculating like rest of us so congrats on being right in a past 24 hour window I guess? Seems kind of like acing an open book exam but good for you.

Yes. My speculation is based on him not waiving his NMC when he had the opportunity to go...

... Seems fairly concrete.

Just seems like a LOT of money available this off-season and limited amount of talent.

Not just about playoff success but making the playoffs. a team like islanders probably, bruins, DRWs, or BJs. im sure others too could just sign marner and that would all but guarantee playoff births for foreseeable future.
Yup. Some GM is going to make a very stupid franchise altering mistake this off season giving this guy draisaitl money.

..bizarrely low, you aren’t even close to contention at that price. In fact, word gets around about your lowball offer and you lose a lil bit of respect around the league.

Nothing would force Marner to sign that deal.
This is what I would offer him, and it's the max value I'd put on the table for him

I still think he re-signs in Toronto, but if he does go to free agency, someone will be offering $13.5m-$14m for him for sure.

It is rare that any player that is better than a ppg and in their prime becomes available like this.

Honestly... if you're Chicago for example, why not give him $15m?

Yes, it's outrageous... but so was giving Nick Foligno $4.5m or Taylor Hall $6m.

They've got a bunch of cap space, and this would be an instant opportunity to make a quantum-leap in terms of talent level.
