Value of: Marner as a UFA

...if Toronto bags in the 1st Round and Marner is his usual disappearing self, he won't get Draisaitl money...
I don't get the hate on Mitch
His playoffs aside from one year seem pretty good, he's also very good defensively.

I would absolutely love him next to EP for the next seven years.
A true playmaking winger is something we desperately need.

I don't think he gets Drai money since Drai scores a shit ton of goals and has proven he's not a product of #97 like everyone says.
I'd say 7×13-13.5 unless a team looking to exit a rebuild more quickly table an insane overpayment.

As a hab fan, if the Habs sign him for 13.5/14 I'd be ok with it...

Would pretty much double anyone signed by Hughes, but I'd be fine with it.
I don't see a big splash on the wing until Gallagher and Anderson are off the books. Center? Maybe. If there's something that makes sense. I think they have every intention of bring Demidov over next year.

Slafkovsky-Suzuki-Caufield
Laine-?-Demidov

That's not to disparage Mitch or to say his regular season production wouldn't be welcome. The concerns about his compete level notwithstanding, I think Hughes will stay the course and only break at the center position.

Let's be honest... He probably works over Toronto to the 11th hour and then gouges them.

As has seemed to be the case with that organization signing their stars for almost a decade now.
That’s pretty much exactly what I see happening. The guy is all about the money and if he signs with another team it’s gonna be more than the offers thrown around in this thread.

If he stays in Toronto he's not getting more than Matthews so there's a hard cap at $13.5AAV there. let's assume it's $12.5-13 x 8. I think this is the most likely option.

If he leaves Toronto then he's just gonna go max money with an NMC. A team would be crazy to pay more than Draisaitl @ $14m AAV but maybe someone is desperate enough to do that but he's clearly not better than Leon and he's also not a C but he is like 1.5 years younger so you are getting more 'prime years' I suppose.

If he doesn't work out in Toronto, I gotta think he wants to go to a contender since he hasn't won anything at the NHL level or come even remotely close. This next contract is gonna determine the course of his career so it would be odd to go to a rebuilding team just based on the hope that they could be competitive one day. But also who knows, maybe he just wants the biggest bag possible and that's fine too.

Oh, are you close personal friends with Marner? Does he have you on his text chain? I can almost guarantee I have a better read on this situation than you do

Yeah bruh you keep reading!

I'm sure when Toronto bails out in the first round this year, again, Mitchy will be much more receptive to Carolina than he was two months before.

The message that was sent was that Marner was interested in trying to win it all with Toronto, but to definitely reach out again in the summer. Could very well be his agent trying to raise the price of Marner's next contract (as one would expect him to do), and I don't think 13-14 from other teams would be enough to pull Marner from the expected 11-12 Toronto offer, but regardless, if he does go looking, Carolina will absolutely be one of those teams in on him.

I'm sure they'll be trying lol.

85 points Suzuki at 7.9 million? Yes please!
95 points Marner at 14 million? Hell No!!

Marner needs to go to a non hockey market. He's not just vanilla soft physically, he's also soft mentally. Kid is not made to play in hockey mecas!

If he thinks TO fans and media are tough he will implode in Montreal.
So we are comparing a RFA contract v UFA here.

Marner is most likely a 12 to 13 million dollar forward.

Suzuki it wouldn't shock me if he passes that number in 5 years when his contract is up.

You realize that @Blueline Bomber was replying to a comment that read 'No contending team has the cap space to offer him xxx money'.

They were just saying that Carolina is a contending team and has the cap. These are facts... plus they have shown interest in Marner from trade talks. Until he hits free agency, if that happens, we have no idea where he will or won't go.

You realize I didn't dispute either of your precious facts, right? Feel free to point out where I did.

Since you wont be able to, just fast forward to addressing Elliotte's report that Marner wouldn't waive his NMC for Carolina two weeks ago.

You make the mistake of assuming Mitch wouldn't waive because he didn't want to go to Carolina. And assuming Toronto will be out in the first round.

We aren't in his head so we have no idea, but it could be he's committed to seeing this season through with Toronto, that he simply wants to test the market in July without ruling anyone out, that he has told Toronto he will negotiate in good faith before July 1st ...

Of course you may end up being right on both points but let's just wait and see how it plays out.

what does him not waiving for carolina 2 weeks ago have to do with the off season? no one knows for sure but im assuming its because he didnt want to do anything mid season. not really that hard to understand.

I'd take him on the Habs, but I wouldn't go above 10M, let alone giving him a richer contract

Slafkovsky - Suzuki - Caufield
Laine - Marner - Demidov

..bizarrely low, you aren’t even close to contention at that price. In fact, word gets around about your lowball offer and you lose a lil bit of respect around the league.
