Keith Petruzelli will not be playing in the NCAA nor on an NHL contract this season.

The 2017 third-round pick of the Detroit Red Wings had parted ways with his rights holder, allegedly by his own choice, and was believed to be looking for a new NHL home or returning for a fifth year at Quinnipiac University. Instead, the AHL’s Toronto Marlies have announced that they have signed Petruzzelli and to a two-year deal. It is quite the unexpected outcome for the decorated NCAA goaltender.
Petruzzelli, 22, is coming off of an excellent collegiate season in which he was named an ECAC first-team all-star, the winner of the Mike Richter Award as the NCAA’s best goalie, and a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award as the NCAA’s most outstanding player.
He posted a .926 save percentage and 1.89 GAA while leading the Bobcats to a conference title and NCAA Tournament appearance. This was expected to boost his value as an NHL prospect. After all, recent Richter award winners include top young pro keepers like Jeremy Swayman, Cayden Primeau, and Thatcher Demko.
Petruzzelli was in a unique situation. Having played four seasons in the NCAA, he could watch the Red Wings’ draft rights expire in August and sign elsewhere. However, he was also granted an additional fifth year of NCAA eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic that would have allowed him to return to Quinnipiac if the NHL market did not develop as he had hoped. He then could have tested free agency next summer. When August 15 came and went and there was no contract announcement, it seemed likely that a collegiate return was likely.
Instead, Petruzzelli is signing an AHL contract and for a two years instead of one. This cannot be the result that Petruzzelli’s camp imagined if and when they spurned Detroit. It’s difficult to imagine that Petruzzelli did not receive an NHL contract, but his representation misread the market.
The talented goaltender is now locked into a low-money, minor league pact when he ideally would have been on an entry-level contract with a shot at NHL starts.
Toronto is also not a great landing spot in particular. The Maple Leafs will have NHL veteran Michael Hutchinson and prospects Joseph Woll and Ian Scott all battling for play time with the Marlies. Petruzzelli, who the team is not as invested in, could easily fall through the cracks.
This may not provide enough exposure to garner NHL offers that could relieve him of his AHL contract. It’s a strange and surprising situation for a such well-regarded prospect and will be an interesting story line to follow in the minors this season.

Seems like Toronto is goalie heavy now…. Isn’t Kallgren coming over too this year? That would make 5 goalies in the AHL (unless the nhl is using a taxi squad again this year?).

Was hoping for Sawchenko last year but this will do. Needed to add another young goaltender to the fold and Petruzelli is pretty good.

Would still like to sign Holt out of rookie camp as well. Like him better than Gauthier.

Interestingly Petruzelli was in Boston's camp earlier and was not signed. A little intrigue.

Standing 6’6″ tall, Petruzzelli has the ideal size that NHL teams have been favoring when drafting goalie prospects. He covers a lot of net. With his good skating ability, he is able to come out to challenge shooters and further minimize the amount of net seen. When Petruzzelli drops down into his butterfly, his long legs take away much of the bottom of the net. His shoulders still reach the crossbar, and there is not a lot for a forward to look at. Petruzzelli also has a good glove and blocker.
Petruzzelli does have some areas to work on. Like many young goaltenders, he will need to improve upon his rebound control. He sometimes kicks pucks out into dangerous areas. He also needs to work on his puck tracking and side-to-side movements. Sometimes Petruzzelli can overslide on a cross-ice play. These issues are all fixable, and not that unusual to see in draft prospects.
Petruzzelli also plays the puck well, making passes to his defenceman to start the breakout. He can catch the opposing team on a line change and make a long pass to get an odd man rush. He loves to come out of his net to play the puck, and does so often. Petruzzelli often keeps the play moving even when he has a chance to cover up. He scored a goal this year, when he shot the puck all the way down the ice and into an empty net.
Mental Makeup

Petruzzelli’s general manager, former NHL goalie John Vanbiesbrouck has been impressed with his mental make-up. “I think he’s prototypical in the way he analyzes, and I think the biggest part of his advancement in his game is his mental approach,” he told NHL.com earlier this year. “He’s very set in what he does, has a really good approach to the game and can be loose about it in a good way. (Petruzzelli’s) able to put things behind him pretty well. He’s able to analyze himself rather than having someone else explain to him where he may be deficient.”
A bad goal does not fluster Petruzzelli. He bounces back quickly. Despite being a rookie, he was a leader and key player on the Lumberjacks. When bombarded with shots, he remained cool in the net, and ready to make the next save.

Well, he's a Massachusetts guy who went to Quinnipiac in Connecticut, so definitely in Boston's backyard. And the Bruins picked Swayman a little lower in the 2017 after Petruzelli (111th vs 88th) so he was probably pinging on their radar for quite some time for various reasons.

Could see Hutch picked up on waivers given his NHL numbers last year and Ottawa/Buffalo could find a spot for him pretty easily. If he clears the Marlies probably keep Hutch/Kallgren/Woll all on the roster and Scott/Petruzelli likely start with the Growlers.

I think there are a lot of signs pointing to the Leafs moving Woll. Ideally he fits in the exact same role as Kallgren would in this organization: #4 who steps into the #3 next year. I don't really see how Kallgren and Woll fit here at the same time, but obviously there is still value in Woll as an asset so they kept him around. Scott/Petruzzelli are the #5/6 this year and are fighting to determining who will be the #4 next year.

I can see the Leafs moving him to a team who needs a quality goalie prospect in the AHL (i.e. San Jose) for a guy who is similarly aged with some good upside but is still a project (i.e. Dahlen, Gregor, Chmelevski, Chekhovich, Blichfeld, etc.).

I agree, and if Hutch is picked up, there’s an injury up top and if Scott has trouble recovering from his hip thing we would be really really thin in pro goalies.

I like us bringing in another goalie prospect. He looks promising. AHL deal is interesting.

Interesting.. by all accounts, he was Detroits best goalie prospect

He was, but our goalie depth is absolute shit. I did want to sign him, but Yzerman let him walk and chose not to sign him to an ELC. I got the impression that with the Nedeljkovic trade and drafting of Cossa, he didnt want to waste a roster spot on him.

No harm. I'd take Ned and Cossa over Petruzzelli any day.

Leafs are thin in terms of actual goalie prospects (Woll and Scott appear to be very meh. Kallgren is in his first year in the organization). Probably more opportunity for him here. Cossa looks absolutely SICK.

I would have taken him on an AHL contract in a second, I would have even signed him to an ELC. This is a low risk, high reward signing by the Marlies.

not necessarily true
Detroit Red Wings: Tanguay, Healing Wings, & so Long Keith Petruzzelli?
Keith Petruzzelli, we hardly knew ye
This also dropped yesterday:
So there’s that. Ryan Hana of the Winged Wheel Podcast responded added this:
The only remaining question, which I’m sure will be answered whether he signs with Detroit or another team (as it now looks), is whether this was just Petruzzelli’s decision or if maybe Yzerman had other plans. Or maybe a combination of both.

I'm not too familiar with that site, but local reporters are the ones who reported Yzerman didnt offer him a contract.

Free asset, from all accounts had a stellar College career. Suspect that Woll and him will be duking it out while Scott spends most of his time in the ECHL.

Hopefully he turns into something, don’t think Campbell or Mrazek is the answer to a SC.
