Kloke did a mailbag and he mentiond a little snippit. He says some people in and around the Leafs organization are wondering if Niemela can make the team.

We already have 7 NHL D signed/RFA, I find that hard to believe.

30 point season; not 30 goal.

Meh, 30 goals is not really impressive in the OHL, especially out of a D+2.

In fact, that likely explains why Dallas didn't sign him.
He had 27 the year before as an 18 year old, 2 points behind team leader in both goals and points.
It isn't like he was on a team with elite players carrying the load.

He's 22 years old, and yes I know he'll likely never be 6'9", but he played the most games for the Marlies this year.

Dobber says:
Big, intimidating center who uses his size as an asset. An agile skater for his size who is often the hardest worker on the ice. Has potential to fill a fourth line role in the NHL.

I wasn’t kidding a couple months ago when I said I’d rather see Niemela on the ice then Holl. I watched almost every game of Topi’s this year, he’s legit and although he’s not physically mature yet, I think there could be a role for him as a #6 or top pairing for Marlies come October.
He’s much closer then people give him credit for, and I also have been wondering if he’ll surprise the org in camp. He has a superb hockey mind and that alone will get him far. Just needs a bit more mass on that frame.
I agree though that it would be a really difficult situation with 3 young defenders on the NHL roster needing minutes. Not sure of a solution, but we can’t ignore a talent like that if he proves to be a legit top 6 option in training camp. I’d imagine Muzz, Sandin, or Holl will be shipped out regardless, before we see what he’s got.

Really hoping for a Curtis Douglas breakout season this year. He was buried pretty low in the Marlies lineup last season and still put up almost 0.5 ppg. I'd like to see him higher up this year.

If he can get close to point per game, he should see some time with the Leafs. He is tough as hell.

A Kaberle type camp and smooth transition would be quite the boon for the Leafs.
Odds are low, but not impossible.
In his favour is the presence of two grizzled vets on the L side to support him, either of which seem like good stylistic fits for him.

I’m hoping to see plenty of youth transition into the lineup this coming season.

It is going to be tough. SDA and Abramov need reps too, and there is a decent chance that a guy like Holmberg or Abruzzese could be another guy they use high in the lineup as a center (assuming they don't sign someone else and both of them are not somehow in the NHL at the same time).

Also important to remember what his role will be in the NHL. He is not going to be given prime offensive minutes. He will likely be a shutdown guy and maybe play as a net front PP guy. That is what I expect his role to be in the AHL.

I think the main hope is that he gets some better line mates.

How much does Douglas throw around his weight? I know he can fight (I've yet to see him lose), but does he hit?

And his numbers are really good for his role in my opinion, does he have 3C upside or is that a pipedream?

He will for sure be a center if he makes the jump to the NHL, right?

Lastly, he is a good skater for his size, right? I've read that, just not sure how true it is.

It'd be nice to have a guy who can stick up for his teammates and be productive.

He throws some absolutely crushing hits. And like you mentioned, not shy to drop the gloves.

He hits. He competes, He uses his size to protect the puck, he bullies in the corners... I see a 4C.. I highly doubt a 3C, but that would be fantastic... yes, he'd be a C in the NHL. He's a decent skater for his size, could use a bit better acceleration. He definitely sticks up for team mates. I'm hoping he makes the NHL.

Thinking a lot about Rodion Amirov lately. I truly hope is doing well. Last report we saw was a few weeks ago about him returning to Germany for his next round of treatment.

His most recent Instagram post is from June 2nd. Seems to be doing some traveling in Russia with friends. Looks to be in good spirits! Kid has such a great outlook on life. I was so impressed with his reaction to this terrible new.

Here's to hoping he gets his health back and can live a normal life. Selfishly, I hope he can start playing hockey again. He looks to be a similar style player to Martin Havlat.

Yup rooting for him. A very joyful kid with a positive outlook for life. Not really thinking about his hockey career at this point, just want him to be fully healthy and cleared of everything

I don't think that is being selfish at all.
That would mean he has fully recovered and reclaimed his life.
So our wishes SHOULD be to see him back on the ice working towards a NHL career.
My guess that is still his dream.

Ivan Marchinenko(spelling ?)

If he drops we should take a chance. Power forward are hard to come by even with his health issues

We should be in including him on any posts we do predicting future line ups.
