Swayman is only 26.
Ullmark I think is overpaid, but Ottawa had no choice.

If things go well in Toronto, Leafs might have to let someone go anyway.

7 mil is pretty high for a guy who will at best have two 1A/B seasons under his belt. Maybe something closer to 5x5 if things go amazingly well for him/the team

Of the seven Canadians drafted in the top 10 in the 2024 NHL draft, only one (Berkly Catton) has a shot at making this team as Celebrini will be in the NHL while Sennecke (3), Iginla (6), Yakemchuk (7) and Parekh (9) were left off the roster and Lindstrom has been injured.

Michael Misa, leading the OHL in scoring, doesn't get an invite.

Hockey Canada continues to do weird things.

I guess they all allegedly have another year of eligibility is the most.... stupid but understandable reason? It's always been a 19 year old tournament so there will be 2023's (2005 birth year) more prevalent on teams like Canada than the 2024 or 2025 draftees.

Yeah its tough to rationalize a lot of it right now and coming off a WJC in which they didn't perform to their expectations, one would think the leadership of Hockey Canada is under some pressure about their selections already.

It's a deep team upfront and on defense, so I guess someone good was bound to be left off... but feels like a lot of top end skill left off which feels like overthinking it to me

Bedard, Celebrini and Benson could play on the team this year too

How has Cade Webber been with the Marlies?

Both him and Rifai are on one way contracts next year, though I guess the leafs can afford to pay them.

Just curious if he’s likely as a 6/7/8 d man next year.

Glancing at some stats from this years draft picks and Victor Johansson’s PIM’s this season really jumped out at me. Only 20 last season but up to 79 already this season. Does anyone watch him play and could provide some insight into the numbers. It’s not like he’s some brut but rather a tall slender individual which makes that stat even more curious.

He's been fine? Pretty much what you'd expect. A defensive and steady low skill defenseman. He's kinda like a poor mans Benoit. Funny enough he's almost at the same amount of points in the AHL than he had in the NCAA last season.

Not sure about his chances next year but I would not be surprised if he was at the very least a 7-8

With more eyes on him than before, it feels like scouts are starting to like what they see – even if he’s far away from being a big-time, impactful player. For starters, he’s listed as 6-foot-1 and 160 pounds. He’s still not strong, but he’s so physically engaged. And that’s always been a thing for him, according to those who have watched Johansson closely – he isn’t afraid to rough it up. It can lead to some ugly penalties at times, and discipline is definitely an issue. But if you’re not a big player but you’re involved in the rough stuff, people take notice.
