Marlies, Cyclones, and Prospect Discussion

Marlies limping hard.
Another L, grip on a playoff spot is loose.
Not scoring much, always giving up early leads, no one’s really going.

I didn't see any of the goals because I was watching the Caps game but every time I tuned and seeing the shot totals it made me wonder if they were really bad. 2 goals on 4 shots early when I first opened the game and then 4 goals on 12 shots the next period. Was goaltending bad or defence just have a few breakdowns that Syracuse took advantage of?

I watched on and off.
The first few goals were breakdowns. Shooters wide open. Which was odd, because overall they kept the oppo shots low.
Has to be deflating for the team. By that I mean, though the young goalies have generally played well (AA and DH) I don’t know how often they’ve been beat fast - ike one of the first three shots - it’s been quite often. And the team all year has rarely won the first period.
I’d estimate the Marlies score first maybe 25% of the time? If that.
Lines have been in a blender the last few weeks too, trying to stimulate something, adjust to less then new guys, and no one has really found synergy.
Steeves has been quiet the last while too.
Not much right going on.
Last night allowed Syracuse to catch them in points with a game in hand. Playoffs are at legit risk.

Very mid Marlies team this year. Not at all impressed with Haymes, likely another guy that disappears into the ether like Casey Bailey after a few years of bouncing around the AHL.

22 year old kid.
Has played 5 games for the Marlies
Just came out of college
New team, coach, players
Very “mid” Marlies team.

What were you expecting of him at this point?

They have the worst record in the ahl in the last 10 games. Just not a lot of scoring happening
Basically when Steeves stopped scoring daily their offense fell apart. Kind of makes the season he's had even more impressive to realize it was entirely him driving it. Sad to see the 'slump', but his pace was likely unsustainable anyways.

I still think he could play he Robertson role in the NHL, but with a more physical edge and likely more defensive responsibilities. If his bar is 10-15 goals, 3rd-4th line usage and ideally some PK, I really don't see why not with his skillset and a good run of playing time next year.

Brantford games are on Roger chanel 430.
Oshawa and Brantford play in the 3 Rd of the playoffs.
So if you want to check Danford here is your chance.

Of course we all expect players to be PPG, when they just to a new level, on a "Mid team". Heck, he should be leading the scoring race by now.

Nothing like having the patience of a gnat, for a player who has... checks... FIVE games at the AHL level.

Yea still nothing on McCue. If he doesn't sign an ATO at the same time as Valis, I have to wonder if he is looking at NCAA options for next year, which is a route I like for him tbh. Not much sense in playing an OA CHL year with that option existing, and no sense rushing him to Pro's after what was really only one pretty solid OHL season.

On the note of Valis, his team lost in Gane 7 last night, so he should be assigned to the Marlies any time now.

Landen Hookey, Spencer Sova, and Hunter Mayo are a few UDFA names I'd like on AHL deals who are also eliminated and without NCAA commitments.

Any word on whether the league has ruled on whether that kind of path would result in an unsigned player switching to NCAA reserve list timelines?

Whatever happens with Danford, I'm happy our scouting is at least willing to draft this type of player in the first round.
I know their limitations and that it's risky business drafting someone without elite offensive upside but in saying that, our current team is a good example where we have two extremely important defencemen in Tanev and McCabe and both don't put up many points but are just very good all around players.

Not saying we should make it a habit but if there's a defencemen at our selection and you think he can be a strong defender all over the ice and is the best player available, go for it even if the offensive upside isn't great.

Drafting our own Brodin or Tanev would be awesome.
