Marlies called up Chas Sharpe from the ECHL. I know a few were pretty hyped about him so maybe we'll get to see him in some games soon. I'm assuming this means that OEL might miss a game or 2 and they already called up Rifai. Or maybe it's nothing because he has earned a shot on the Marlies judging from his stats.

They played Matt Anderson today, he played well, Kokkonen and Benning were both out of line up. Hopefully Sharpe gets in for Wednesday's game.

Yeah I saw they signed Anderson to a PTO a few days ago. Didn't know how soon he was gonna play but I believe he played on the Marlies last season for a bit so he's probably familiar with the system.

Impressive from Sharpe is his +/- being neutral for Cincinnati, who are -23 as a team and have a losing record.
The Valis signing got me to thinking of next year, where the Marlies D might look much different.
He’s done lots to earn an ELC, maybe especially since there aren’t too many guys graduating this year.

Cincinnati Cyclones fan here who is interested in how Sharpe looks in the AHL. Any feedback would be appreciated.

He's got a good shot (speed/release) but isn't very physical and I have no idea how he'll look defensively at a higher level. He's only 21 so just getting a few games in has value for him in terms of what he needs to work on.

I'll leave an analysis of a Cyclones player on a Leafs ELC:

Ty Voit is not an NHL prospect IMO. I'd seen him play twice as a junior and hoped that his game would translate to the next level but it hasn't and I don't think that it will.

He's small and slow and the next puck battle he wins will be his first. He's physically very weak. He hardly ever delivers a quick, crisp pass as he's always trying to saucer and feather passes. He's got the "I'm the smartest player on the ice mentality" from what I can see. Which would be nice if he was but he's not. It seems as if he's trying to make a "cute" play every time and that doesn't cut it-even in the ECHL.

I thought that he'd maybe need some time to get up to speed after the major shoulder issues, but he's become less effective as the season has progressed. Not a good sign.

IIRC he's got another year left on his ELC so I'd expect him to play another year in the Leafs organization-mostly at the ECHL level and then head to a lower level European league.

Topi Niemela being linked to Lulea HF (SHL) this morning, with one report stating it's done. I guess we'll know soon enough.

Unclear if that's imminent and a loan/contract termination situation or for next season.

For it to come to this, you'd have to imagine they tried to trade him and we're only getting uncompelling prospect swap offers to the point that they rather give internal players more opportunity and eventually just target prospects they want through the various CHL, NCAA, and Euro options.

The org seems concerned about the skating/strength combo from the earlier article with quotes from Wickenheiser and the offense wasn't anything crazy. He must be viewed as not being very prohectable by anyone to potentially be SHL bound now.

That entire 2020 draft feels like a write off. So many draft picks(11) in total. Ofcourse bad luck with one player (RIP)

But every other pick was very similar, smallish players with best upside was a depth player. What a wasted year
Only thing can salvage that draft is may be Artur Akhtymov

As for Niemela, the hype around the kid was something else. He did show promise especially in WJC but his progression has totally staled

Drives me nuts when prospects are told exactly what is keeping them out of the NHL and then do absolutely none of that work, or obviously not enough of it.

Any of those prospects who work incredibly hard to change their game to find a role in the league...can't help but love those guys.

I went to the Marlies next Gen game with my kids this past Saturday afternoon. Was a fun tight game filled with rough stuff. The line I liked the most was the Greb-Pare-Tverberg line. Scored a goal (Tverberg) and were generally a pain in the ass to play against all game. I thought Villeneuve was pretty smooth and Niemela was okay but none of the d really stood out. Hildebeast wasn’t tested much in first period but made some great saves in the third and stayed perfect in the shootout. Loved the crowd, the next gen crowds get really into it and loud.
