Marleau and Thornton sign 3 year extensions

sweeeeeet. Marleau and Thornton signed, and I finally got access to hfboards from my office computer! Great Friday all around!

"Patrick and Joe continue to perform at an elite level in the National Hockey League and, most importantly, they make the other players around them better," general manager Doug Wilson said. "They both made it very clear that they wanted to stay in San Jose and we were able to agree on contracts that fit with our team building philosophy."

I have a feeling we're not going to keep Boyle around unless he takes a sizable pay cut. Our other UFAs are Brown, Hannan and Kearns which aren't exactly big priorities.

Niemi is UFA after next season, if we plan on keeping him long term we're probably going to have to give him an extension sooner rather than later as well considering DW's track record of not letting guys get to FA that he wants to keep.

If I'm DW, I'm not retaining Dan Boyle unless he takes a one year contract with bonuses. He's not playing like Marleau or Thornton where their skills that brought them to the dance and makes them great players is in question like it is with Boyle right now.

As for Niemi, I would trade him this off-season if Stalock continues on like this. Re-signing Niemi, especially if he rebounds next year, would require somewhere between 5.5-6.5 million and he's just not worth it. If Stalock continues to show that he's worthy of more opportunities, I would roll the dice on him as a starter and invest more heavily into the skaters especially on the blue line.

Same with Braun. He's UFA next summer, and we usually see DW extend guys one year early. SO I'd expect a Braun extension this summer.

I expect a Braun re-signing a little after July 1. Demers and Wingels are obviously keepers but it depends on how they want to structure their contracts. If we're talking two or three years for these guys, it's probably near 3 million. Higher if it's longer. Braun is probably playing at a 3.5-4 mil level right now given his minutes.

bolding this for all the ones that said the players that get signed 1st are the top paid players on the team.

This is brilliant cap management by DW and a commitment to win from the guys themselves.

By my calculations, we'll have ~$12M next year to re-sign the likes of Demers, Wingels, Stalock (who would get raises) and Boyle (who'd get a paycut) to field a full 21-man roster. And that's assuming that we let Havlat stick around!

No possibility Havlat will be here next year. If he doesn't agree to a trade or there are no takers he will be bought out. Wilson is now paying a nurse to push him around in a wheelchair make his meals, put him to bed etc so there is no chance he will pull a muscle, sprain an ankle etc so that no injury will prevent buyout this summer.

I don't understand what you're trying to say.

there were people saying when couture and pavs were signed, that there was no way the sharks would go outside of there mold of signing players for marleau, thornton.

top paid players signed 1st (couture, pavs were signed 1st).

so in other words there was no chance that marleau and thornton would be given anything more then what couture and pavs were made because it didn't fit wilsons way of signing players.

Oh. I must of missed those. Now they know :)

This is great to have our two young future stars that are going to carry this team for the next 10 years locked up!

I hope we can build a team around them now! :sarcasm:

Two SJS legends playing their best hockey every sign a three year extension on a Friday. ****. Yes. Don't even care that I am working though the weekend for 10 days straight. Their commitment to this team and winning should really light a fire.

Simply brilliant deals. I don't know how anyone can complain about DW anymore. The great moves just keep coming.
