Jets star Mark Scheifele sued by former personal chef

Don't think I've ever seen this before.

How many players have a personal chef in their employ? Must be more common than I think. :dunno:
I'm guessing a lot.

I know for a fact that both Wheeler and Morrissey from the Jets have their own chefs. Wheeler's got a wife and three kids, so that makes some sense.

Did not know about Scheifele having one until this article.

Interesting.

Maybe the other player Scheifele wanted meals for was Tyler Seguin.....the two have an ongoing battle before every Stars-Jets game, maybe their RPS showdowns are to see who gets the personal chef for the month. :sarcasm:

The idea that he was "wrongfully terminated" and was promised health benefits to be a personal chef gives off some serious red flags to me. Maybe Schiefele did promise health benefits, but it just seems weird for a private citizen to offer health benefits for that kind of work and it's really weird that he can be wrongfully terminated from that job.

Not paying him on time is believable, but the rest just seems weird. Maybe Schiefele's agent would be the one setting up health benefits, but wouldn't that mean that Schiefele's agent was also responsible to pay him? Just seems weird.

Yeah, you’re putting my thoughts into words here. I don’t want to draw conclusions from scraps of info, but this language sounds more like a dispute between a company and employee rather than between a private citizen and a self-employed contractor. “Wrongful termination” and claims on health benefits are weird things to see here.

I'm married to a personal (private) chef, it's not unusual at all. If they had a legally binding contract, which I am assuming they did, and Scheifele annulled said contract without prompting or missteps on the part of the chef, the chef was most likely wrongfully terminated. The language in the contract would obviously have to establish the parameters of what a wrongful termination would look like, but if the termination breaches one or more of the terms established, then...suit

I'm not privy to the nitty gritty of this case, but I doubt some guy making 50k a year is going to publicly go through the ringer like this without a hill to stand on, so to speak.

Receiving benefits in that line of work is also completely standard protocol. They often take a variety of forms but it's hardly unusual to receive dental, prescription drug coverage, etc.

If I had millions I'd absolutely have a personal chef and I'm a fat slob, I imagine it's much more important for these guys who probably all have very stringent nutrition guidelines that they live by.

I hope it's not the case where because he's paying him he thinks he's entitled to be a jackass to him. If you're only making $50,000, need to expense the food at your own cost before reimbursement and then getting paid late on top of that you can see how this situation spirals out of control. And this is before demanding him to cook for 2, doubling the cost of food.

The reason for the lawsuit?

He invited Dustin Byfuglien over for meals. The Chef couldn't keep up.

Ahead of the 2018-19 season, Scheifele’s agent, Robert Hooper, reached out to Senaris and “demanded” that another NHL player be included in the contract. The lawsuit did not identify the other player by name, per Pritchard.

Checks out.

I'm honestly surprised teams don't have services like this for their players. When you're paying that much salary to young men who may have no idea how to cook for themselves or put together a healthy diet, it makes sense to help them.

Yeah, would make more sense for teams to have these services lined up and players pay into it.

24/ 7 Personal chef for a player could be considered as a benefit and potential cap circumvention.
