I can remember being in school and having classes shut down to watch the Forsberg goal against Canada in the shootout.

The 1996 World Cup has to be one of the biggest upsets in hockey.

Crosby's Golden Goal is the modern iconic moment in Canadian Hockey history. I'm sure there is a whole generation of players who would love to have that experience. The World Championships don't feature the best players, because many of them are still battling for the Stanley Cup.

In Asia, like the Original best on best Olympics in Nagano, the time differential is too hard on fans, but the Olympics in Europe will bring back some of that fever.

I agree about Russia, but I just watched the Unified States beat Canada in the 1992 Olympics, with Lindros, Juneau, Sean Burke in net. Damn those Russians. They should be in the tourney, maybe the end of the war this year changes some tunes.

I'd love to see some of our Jets have this Olympic experience. There's nothing like it. When patriotism is bigger than the Stanley Cup.

Its funny most of my vivid memories ended in about 1987 (I'm obviously allot older than you). I do remember that upset in 1996 I was at a wedding and they had the TV on and it was a bit of a buzz kill. I was living in Arizona during the Sid Golden goal Olys and they were not televising it in the US that I could find and I wasn't really into the winter Olympics that year.

I think the war would have to wrap up by this summer to get Russia back into the next Olys but I'm not really sure about the pace of international politics or the state of the situation? Now that the president in the US has changed that might alter the dynamics of this conflict but I am way above my punching weight on this topic.

It will be interesting to see what Jets get to go the Olys. I assume the three guys in the 4 nations should all have a solid shot. Perhaps Scheifele if Canada crashes and burns in the 4 nations.

Scheifele should be a lock after winning the Cup this year. ;)

Oh my yes, I agree with you here. For the 4 Nations, I feel it's better than the All Star game... but my interest was still almost 0. Seeing Sid in the Maple Leaf yesterday (I caught the last half of the game) did warm my heart a bit. The pace/intensity of the game was higher than expected as well.

Hahaha I hear that. With my current family schedule, late games actually work much better for me. Sadly, I miss a bunch of earlier games. I don't have much free time for sports at all these past few years and have stopped watching NHL/NBA pretty much altogether. I can never seem to give up the Jets, though, so I do catch as much as I can.

100% with you on this, I don't care for the mid-season break to feature an intense tournament. Have the World Cup of Hockey or the Olys before/after the NHL season.

Not having Russia is definitely a turnoff, geopolitical issues aside. I still feel that best-on-best national team competition is our greatest opportunity to see stacked teams from each nation face off. We haven't seen a proper international competition in 11 years.

Still not sold on the 4 Nations stuff, and feel it's just a gimmicky All Start game replacement. Sort of like the last "World Cup of Hockey" having gimmick teams. Give me best-on-best national teams (all of them) and I'm in.

You can't put the geopolitical issues aside though. Well you can, in your own mind. They are there and they are far more important than hockey.

Having Russia there would be a total turnoff for me.

My mom let me skip school to watch game 8 of the 72 series.
I was shocked when we tied it up but when Henderson scored the game winner at the end of the game, I have never been more proud to be a Canadian.
I had a BIG hate on for Russia for years because of that series.

Sorry Scheif, you should have been in the 4 nations tourney, but I'm glad you're not.

I, too, don't like the league shutting down in mid season and make everyone play a bunch of games in a short time. I'd be okay with a tournament in August like they used to for the Canada Cup.

You can't play the Winter Olympics in August. At least you shouldn't.

Maybe the Olympics will lose their allure over time, but you think guys like Nik and Nino aren't looking forward to representing their countries on the big stage? It's the experience of a lifetime.

Guaranteed if the NHL is looking for some concessions from the NHLPA in the next CBA, putting the Olympics on the table from now until 2034 is going to get some traction.

The World Cups though is the NHLPA's gold mine, so I'm not surprised they are coming back, because like this 4 Nations tourney, without it being an IIHF event, the money goes into HRR and back into the players pockets July 1st and beyond.

Agreed. When a country goes rogue and infringes on another's sovereignty, the rest of the world has limited levers to use to show their disapproval.

I didn't even mention the olympics.
I meant they should play it in August like they did the Canada Cups.

same with the USA. right now the IOC and world should be preventing the US from competing until they quit threatening Canada.

The USA hasn't quite crossed the line - yet. Who will stand up to them when they

And the other countries they invade, coup, and exploit? Only when it happens to us are we upset? Are we fine with their imperialism as long as they leave us be?
nope i’ve been calling out American hypocrisy and warmongering pretty much my whole life.

From Pinochet to the Contras, to the Middle east and Palestine.

from Raygun Ronnie right to today.

DOWN WITH THE USA

buncha warmongering corporate whore gun nuts.

further to that i’d like to point out the CONservatives and their agenda of supporting the American Empire and the equally complacent Lip service Liberals.

So anyway Mark Scheifele was taken #7 overall in the 2011 draft. It was the first Chevy draft pick and the first for True North. There were some rough times in the beginning. Mark couldn't stay on his feet and was pushed around a lot. But I was a believer and bought his jersey in late 2013 (no A on it yet). I was at the game against the islanders on March 5 2014 when he blew out his knee and missed the rest of the season. When he scored 14 goals in 17 playoff games in 2018 I thought he might have peaked as a player. But he has yet to start his decline. The years after that he seemed to struggle to find his game. At 31 years old he looks better than ever.

It was a tragedy not to be selected for team Canada and they will struggle to beat the USA in part because the #3 goal scorer in the NHL is currently in a flippin hot tub somewhere with his feet up.
