Four seasons as a high level first line player seems significant when comparing their careers. Marchand finished 68th last season, so it's possible that he won't age as gracefully as they did.

Role player in the sense that he was at best 4th on the importance chart on the Cup teams behind Kane, Toews and Keith.
Sure that's fair comment but most people when they hear "role player" they think PK shutdown Dman or 3rd line energy center buzzsaw ect....so I just wanted to put his role in some perspective.

Put another way if one were to give a % to their importance and give the top player (Toews or Keth for me) as 100% then Kane would be a 95 and Hossa maybe a 94 or 93 as the differences are that Kane was more offensive but Hossa's had excellent offensive play along with great defense.

A current example would be Evan Bouchard or Zach Hyman this past season for the Oilers the gap between 3rd and 4th best Oilers to Ekholm whom I would have 3rd isn't that great.

That's fair but Marchand is playing with by far the worst centers after age 35 among this trio right?

Don't get me wrong I have Hossa comfortably ahead of Marchand career wise and I doubt that changes but post 30 he has been fine the difference is that Marchand didn't really become a top line guy until he was 27.

Marchand's being a bit of a late bloomer kills his chances against a guy who was an impact NHL player at 20 years old. I think their primes are close but overall body of work it's Hossa. Complete package player and consistently good for a long period of time.

I think -moreso than 95% of players who have ever played the game- when you are having a conversation about Hossa, you have to look beyond the point totals. He played an elite defensive game to the point that he was in Selke conversations as a winger. He was also a far superior passer - he made some of the best cross-ice saucer passes I’ve ever seen.

He was but was replying to someone regarding cup win teams and he won it as rookie only. It's not a knock he's a great player but I believe Hossa to be the more complete and better player.

He contributed more in games 3-7 than Hossa did in the 3 Chicago Finals.

Hossa 3 Cup Finals: 21 games, 1 goal, 10 pts, +1
Marchand gms 3-7: 5 games, 5 goals, 7 pts, +7

Not to mention he had 2 goals and 3 points in game 7

Marchand had a better peak (1st/2nd all-star teams: 4 vs Hossa's 1, twice top 5 in Hart voting), but his late start to greatness will probably prevent him from having a better overall career.

Gap is probably closer than we think. Hossa is basically the archetype of everyone’s ideal winger and Marchand is….Marchand.

That’s all great if we’re defining players’ entire careers by less than 1% of all of the games they’ve ever played.

You could say “you have to look beyond the point totals” with the pest element of Marchands game. Plus he’s had a knack for being in the right place at the right time in scoring goals.

Not saying Marchand is better but your points can be countered.

So you think Marchand is better because of those 5 games ok. Your opinion and I can respect that.
