For you youngsters, on this day in 2005 Marek Malik (not a noted goal scorer) pulled off one of my favorite Ranger memories growing up

In the 15th round of the shootout shot a puck through his legs to beat the Capitals goalie Kolzig (Olie the Goalie)

I remember exactly where I was sitting when I watched it live.. I literally jumped hitting the ceiling when it happened

I dont know how to post the youtube or else I would

I was at my buddy's who was doing grad school at the University of Maryland. We were just starting to get a party going but I was in his room listening to the radio feed of this game (I think it was on TV locally but he didn't have a TV). Some crazy shit, I couldn't believe it, and I didn't even actually see the goal until the next day on SportsCenter.

One thing I remember about this team was that we had three defensemen that most people hated: Malik, Rozsival, and Poti.

Rozsival was the one I really had a hard time understanding. We got him for nothing and he became a legitimate two-way, top four defenseman. He went on to score some big goals for us. His second contract wasn't good, but that wasn't on him. He always gave a good effort. I recall towards the end, the MSG crowd booing him a few times when they called his name on goals or assists. And once we dumped him he went on to find a home in Chicago where he won a couple of Cups. Good for him.

Malik I think it was mostly to do with the fact that the guy only knew how to poke check, and people couldn't fathom how a guy his size could have such an aversion to physical contact. But for a while he was a pretty solid defensive defenseman for the team. I think the fact that he and Rozsival were both Czech and often a pairing led to even more disdain for them, LOL.

Poti was one of those guys that led to the phenomenon of people screaming "SHOOT!" for two solid minutes on the PP. I understood the dislike for him more than the other two. Very soft and frustratingly inconsistent. Sometimes he looked like he could be a top puck moving D in the league and other times he just looked horrible. I know he hung around for several years after we got rid of him and did ok for himself, but man was he hard to root for. f***ing nerd.

Genuinely one of my favorite rangers memories ever. I probably recreated that shot a million times in my driveway when I was 11 years old.

Also I swear to god it looked so much more crisp when I watched on tv then.

Modern screens make it look like that game was played in a cave lmao

Craziest New York sports weekend of my life. This game, a double or triple OT win by the Knicks with David Lee scoring on a buzzer beater alley oop and then the next game was the infamous game the Giants lost against Seattle where Jay Feely missed three game winning field goals.

The youtube clip of a fan calling him a nerd lives rent-free in my brain

I don't think you can talk about fan hatred for Poti without starting from the Mike York trade.

I didn't read these comments yet but I remember Jason Strudwick had to score to keep the shoot out going. He scored a beauty!

It doesn't feel that long ago, but I watched this game on a CRT.
I remember it was the day before Thanksgiving. Me and my mom had the game on the radio feed listening to it while we were cooking. We had to watch it later.

I've heard people talking about this, but have never seen it. I think I'm the only person on earth who hasn't. I'm probably the only one who has never seen a shootout either.
