Player Discussion Marco Rossi

Comparing similar age seasons only applies when it’s convenient. That’s good to know.
Hard to use a a players stats the season after a contract was signed to justify their contract tho, no? You want to look at the resume of the player up until the deal to get an idea of where the contract should be. I get they’re off by a season in terms of resume, but it’s not like it’s 29 years old vs 24 years old. They’re both going to sign as young centers. Rossi lost a year too. I don’t think it’s the wrong thing to do.

Byfield is just flat out a better player. Exhibit A for why Rossi shouldn’t get $7M AAV.

@mnwild GM Bill Guerin on @Fox9Sports Tonight. #mnwild fans listen. It's sure sounds like #Kap extension is done & will be announced on July 1st. Marco Rossi will not be Moved Unless #mnwild get Win Now Piece. Will get there C Through Trade #mnwild

It’s weird that 5’10” Kaprizov and 6’3” Eriksson Ek are basically the same weight (202 vs 207). I’ll submit that as an example that Rossi can impact his size by adding muscle weight.
My son(lives downtown in the same area) has run into Kap and other players. Kap is not tall at all, but is really thick, with thick legs. I have also heard that Marco is pretty thick, though less than Kap- he is also younger.

I don't think that Rossi's strength, or lack of it, is a big issue, unless you have unrealistic expectations of his game. He is a cerebral, skilled, offensive player with a good work ethic. He is stronger than Granlund was at the same age, I think. It was said that he came into camp pretty buff, and was about 190 lb. I thought he was fine last year(again, I don't expect him to be a brute out there)- sticking his nose into board battles, hanging around net front- till some time in March/April, when I noticed him pulling up to avoid hits that he would've been in on earlier in the year. I suspect an upper body injury. That, and maybe losing weight over the course of the season, which happens with some younger athletes. They can't get the same workouts and eating habits that they do in the offseason, and the games end up draining them.

Y’all sure love to spin things.
There’s not really any spinning. I’m not a huge fan of Rossi but 7M is fair for the player he is over the course of a long term deal with where the cap is going. I’m totally fine trading him if the right deal is there, but I don’t think it is. From an asset management perspective, just sign him to a long term deal and preserve the asset. When a real difference maker comes available, he can be one of the main pieces in the deal. The reality is, even if Rossi is off the team next year, there’s no center we’re bringing in that makes us even close to a real contender.

All true above, but BG also has the option to sign him to a bridge at a lesser amount and term. Rossi and his agent can squawk all they want- he has no recourse other than an offer sheet, and I think BG will match anything under the 7.02M mark... not sure about beyond.

Rossi could sit out until there is a solution for all involved parties. It's unlikely but possible after all romours there have been so far. 1st July is coming soon, I think we won't have to wait too long until we know where and on what terms Rossi's NHL carreer is going to continue.

Sitting out is cutting off your nose to spite your face. It would hurt Rossi as much as, if not more than, MN. It's not really an option, which is why it is seldom seen. Sitting out while not getting paid, and watching others take your spot in the lineup, makes no sense for him.

I'm not saying that it would make sense for either side. I'm just saying that there is a 2nd option for Rossi, if Guerin doesn't want to sign him for something reasonable and doesn't wanna offer more than 5m per year. It's unlikely that he's gonna sit out, but its possible. Why should Rossi play another minute for a franchise that actually doesn appreciate him?

Because at the very, very end of the day, $25 million is a lot better than $0 million.

$$$, and it hurts his career. Is also counter to anything, character wise, I have seen out of Rossi, whose beef is with the GM, not his teammates. Once you sit out, it divorces you from your teammates, and gives you a rep. Not worth it for Rossi, on many levels, and any agent who advises him to sit out rather than work behi d the scenes to resolve things is incompetent.

What’s the market on a 5 year deal? That’s what is being discussed. If Byfield got $6.25M after a 55 point season playing 16.5 minutes in his 21 year old season, why would Rossi get more than that for a 60 point season playing 18.25 minutes per night in his 23 year old season (less time left till his prime peak)?

Based on Rossi wanting 7 x $7M I'd say it's $6M, which is less than the ~$6.8M that Byfield's deal would be under a $95.5M cap.

So, everybody wins.
